I have one of those old netbooks, an acer aspire one A110L

battery died, it also had a slow 8GB SSD so the only thing you could put there is some linux distro with openbox.
>>
>>55022910
It's a fucking netbook, the whole point is to sacrifice performance for portability. The EEE was the first of its kind and changed the laptop market to start offering better options in the ultra portable segment.

Acer did a much better job with the Aspire One than ASUS did. Especially the D257 model.

Nearly bought a Eee PC 1000HA this afternoon $15, but missing power supply.
Figured even if it worked, between getting a new power supply, cleaning it and whatnot, I'd probably be better off just buying one of those sub$100 windows tablets.
Plus I'm still sitting on two Mini 9 machines.

You can't fit a desktop processor, desktop heatsink, desktop graphics card, etc etc in a laptop. Naturally, it follows that the smaller the laptop, the more compromises it has to make. Why is this so hard to understand?

>Acer did a much better job with the Aspire One than ASUS did.
After ASUS created demand for netbooks in the first place.
>>
>>55023111
raspberry pis are at best $35, but they use the arm processor which doesn't play well with my software. Also netbooks on ebay are something like $50, with more space/ram and they're definitely faster.
Raspberry pis are jacked up arduinos, not smaller netbooks.

I have similar specs with OP, Linux is the main OS I use.
3D modeling, rendering, network rendering, better multi tasking, no other obscure service wasting your CPU resources, etc.

So yeah, unless you're gaymer, linux is the best in the 'serious computing'.

>you can't fit a PC CPU in a laptop and can't fit a desktop GPU chipset in a laptop
Say what? ECS,Fujitsu-Siemens and Compaq already did this way before Atom came into play.

ECS did it with the G733 - SiS 650 (which is desktop) and SiS961UA southbridge. Hell, that laptop even has 'lytic caps for the CPU (albeit crappy, since they're Teapo).

Fujitsu Siemens did it again with the D7820 - 2.8GHz Pentium 4 Northwood. Yes,a real mPGA478B Pentium 4. GPU was a Radeon M9 which is exactly the same as a PC Radeon 9200-9250.

Compaq is by far the oldest in the bunch, doing this since the Pentium III era - the Armada 110 basically features a 866MHz Pentium 3 Socket370 chip. Not to mention, the GPU is provided by Trident, and runs on a AGP bus (because of the chip itself being designed for AGP). Even the chipset is a normal PC motherboard sized VIA VT8601N,which is a version of the PLE133 chip.

So yo summarize your stupid idea,a small laptop with PC components can still be done. Atoms are already integrated on motherboards (on PC boards as well). DDR2-800 (or DDR3,depending on the version of the Atom and the chipset it runs on) can be installed through a 90* tilted RAM slot,a PC GPU chipset with its RAM can be integrated,as long as the chipset runs at stock clocks (ie. a stock 450MHz GF8500 runs cooler than having it running at 490MHz core),and the rest can be your usual keyboard and touchpad stuff (this isn't hard, those just hook on the PS/2 (or USB) input signals and send their data there) and the LCD can be simply wired through the LCD/LVDS signal of the chipset (yes, chipsets do supply this signal).

All in all, yes. A small notebook and any laptop can still be made with half PC parts. Now get the fuck out.

Absolutely nothing. In fact,I had the Compaq Armada 110 considerably work better than a Dell Inspiron 4100 (mobile PIII)

you don't do anything worthwhile on them, and so the act of collecting technology is more appealing to you than the act of using it or creating with it

also, you ran out of money before you could purchase the 12th
>>
>>55026176
So then why are gaming laptops incredibly thick and hot and have shit battery life and why do smaller laptops generally perform worse?
>>
Because you found some company offloading them for either dirt cheap or free and saved them a trip to the recycling center.

Have an Acer Aspire One. I upgrade the ram to 4gb some years ago because 1gb was unbearably slow. Still runs Windows 7 fine but it's catching dust somewhere because I never use it anymore

I was pretty sure the chip set in those topped out at 2GB, so I want to say bullshit. But I dont know how long acer recycled the name "aspire one", so maybe not.

That said, I did have an n270 based netbook back in the day, and with 2GB of ram and a (then) good SSD, it was a pretty great portable.
>>
>>55026227
I'd simply say - thermal protection slowdown for the latter, and inadecvate batteries (for the load they have to endure). Thermal protection has been since the Pentium 3 and 4 days. AMD on the other side...it would be a miracle if they actually implemented thermal protection, since I remember their Palomino chips running up in smoke.

Well, unless you have nvidia too, you won't run it fully optimized because 3DS is kike nest.
Speaking of CAD (which is why you list CATIA,etc.) Our company use MODO which is way superior in terms of modeling compared to Solid work, oh, and it is natively running on Linux.

P.S. All big names 3D modeler/renderer have Linux native applications, they just release it to big studios and not to public and we all know why.
