Price, battery life, power, can't lay flat, shitty hinge, bulky, overheats
Show me how it's good? It sounded fantastic before release. But it has a myriad of problems unfortunately. It's a beautiful laptop but ultimately the Dell 7000 series or the rMBP are better high end, lightweight laptops.
>>
>>54988561
Not bulky, doesn't overheat, hinge is genius, you can lay it flat (wtf does that mean?), battery life is top tier when attached to keyboard
>>
>>54988577
The battery life goes to shit doing anything remotely intensive. And is only comparable o a 2013 macbook otherwise. Hardly top tier. The hinge had pretty widespread issues, most notably where springs inside would dislodge when laid flat. While bulky is an overstatement, it's maximum thickness is larger than its contemporaries. And it does overheat and throttle pretty bad. This is fact
>>
>>54988534
windows 10
>>
that dumb shit hinge that doesn't fold flat makes me unhappy
>>
>>54988665
>>54988705
Why the would you want the laptop to lay flat? Do you mount it on the wall and type on it with darts ?

this, the fucking shit gap when it's closed
put it in a bag
oh hey, now there's stress on that weird hinge design that also detatches

enjoy your $1500 paperweight after someone bumps into you on the subway or something

it's fucking overdesigned idiocy, I think just to avoid "macbook clone" criticism
>>
>>54988766
plus, on the bottom the keyboard is level with the top surface of the frame instead of sunk in like every other thin/ultraportable computer

meaning, if that hinge could be completely closed, your keys would be all over the screen

msft failed laptop design 1101
>>
>>54988739
So the hinge and screen don't break when you drop it you tard. You don't use it flat, it's when someone knocks it down or you drop it. It's a basic ergonomic principle that it's easier to cushion a blow rather than stop it. Which is why high end laptops lay flat instead of resisting that downward force. Also the gap is retarded. When I stick it in my bag I don't want pens and shit scratching up my screen.

Even OS X.

Ultrabooks are a meme. It's not that hard to carry a few kgs, desktop experience on the go is worth it.
>>
>>54988534
The price.
>>
Lacks the portability of a Surface Pro 4. The weight reminded me of a ThinkPad.
>>
>>54990026
>desktop experience on the go is worth it
No it's not, even with weight out of the question desktop power (it really isn't, it's just a more powerful laptop) brings a lack of battery life, which is far more important.
>>
>>54988534
>headphone jack on the screen
>effectively takes 2x more space because of the gap
>gimped hardware
Before you start with "show me similarly sized laptop with better hardware", no. If you can't put decent hardware in something, don't bother making something. And the moment something stops fitting in your pocket is when size stops mattering at all - you'll need a bag either way, just get a bigger one.
>>
>>54990119
>And the moment something stops fitting in your pocket is when size stops mattering at all
Blatantly false. I just encountered a 17" laptop for the first time a few days ago, that thing was a fucking behemoth. Even 15" is rather large, 12" masterrace reporting in.
>>
>>54990080
Laptop CPUs(proper ones, not U or atoms) became on par with desktop ones ages ago. Hard drives are literally same. Recent laptop GPUs pack a huge punch. So no, it IS desktop experience.
>>
>>54990026
I have an ultra book with 2.4ghz i7 and 16gbs of ram. All ultrabook means is thin, light laptop really. Any decent laptop is going to be an ultrabook. Also for anyone that needs portability even half a bound is a world of fucking difference
>>
>>54990144
Depends on the manufacturer. 14 is master race, 15 is alright.
>>54990168
You have gimped i7, guaranteed.
>>
>>54990184
>Depends on the manufacturer
No manufacturer can make a x" laptop smaller than x" diagonally, it's physically impossible.
>You have gimped i7, guaranteed.
As it should be, less power consumption means more battery life.
>>
>>54988534
The broken as fuck video drivers, the fact that every build breaks something new on it.
>>
>>54990205
This a 15'6 laptop. OMG SO HUGE.
>as it should be
Gimped hardware = gimped experience.
>>
>>54990238
>OMG SO HUGE.
It is. Not in the sense that it's too much to handle, but in the sense that it's unnecessarily large.
>Gimped hardware = gimped experience
If it can run a browser and an SSH client it's more than enough. Hell, I could go back to an Atom N270 netbook without issue. In fact, I regularly do.
>>
>>54988534
>Protip

I stopped reading there
>>
>>54990238
It's a 5500u. It can clock up to 3.2ghz if needed but I usually have it at 1.4 because I like having 12 hours of battery life. And that's more than enough for playing dark souls, stalker or whatever else I feel like playing. If I need to draw in cad I just plug it in. Can't draw with a touchpad anyways.
>>
>>54990254
>If it can run a browser and an SSH
Anon, everything "can" run that. But modern web can make stutter any machine. Some tasks just need power.
>>54990280
U are gimped in more ways than just frequency and voltage.
>>
>>54990312
>Anon, everything "can" run that
No fucking shit
>>
>>54990333
Ability to run something doesn't mean it will be a good experience. Theoretically you could run Dark Souls by emulating x86 with pen and paper, but would you want to?
>>
>>54990385
That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read on /g/. Quite the accomplishment, anon.

i've been around since before 1Mget and it really never was.

the effect that nostalgia has on memory is way too well-understood to justify your misplaced fondness for "old /g/". just like when retards say that /g/ used to not have macfags. it has always had macfags. we even used to have *worse* tripfags than we have now.
>>
>>54992222
Now you really have to explain further.
>>
Reconnecting the keyboard may cause the tablet to instantly reboot, not giving you an option to save anything in the progress.
>>
>>54988534
The headphone jack placement.
Noports.
Can't even close it properly.

And of course the biggest flaw: Micropajeet Windows.

the tripfags? not only did we have so many of them that we had competing "tier" assignments. this was one of the more recent ones that looks like it was a troll ranking. i can't find full size versions of the others.

then there was frozen void and the others. some tripfags posted avatars, signatures, ghost bumped back when that was possible (posting to bump a thread, then instantly deleting the post; this was back before there were either post timeouts or delete timeouts).

5-10 years ago was a total clusterfuck.
>>
>>54992309
yeah I remember this shit. At least in the day we had desktop threads to keep the autists occupied
>>
>>54992330
>At least in the day we had desktop threads
we have like a dozen "general" threads. do you think the watch, battlestation, EDC, etc... threads are there for socially normal people?
>>
>>54990238
>>54990184
You guys realise that "gimped" is a subjective word now.
There used to be low voltage and full voltage dual-core CPUs only. That's when "gimped" can be used.

Now there are 15W dual core laptop i7 and 35W quad core laptop i7. They are now different parts with different cores and power consumption.

Technically the quad-core laptop i7 is also a gimped version of the desktop i7. If you're using mobile CPU, you're using a gimped CPU.
>>
>>54992340
yeah but nothing compares to the massive shitstorm that was desktop generals

desktop threads were just one of the many ways that /g/ was more chaotic and generally worse than they are today. i would argue that the only way /g/ was better back then was that people kept this board about technology.

today you see people posting shit like "X is technology" where X is literally whatever is going on in their lives. it's fine for people to have various interests, but 4chan was a much more interesting place when everyone lurked a handful of boards, keeping topical interests in their relevant places. you still got influence from other boards, without any of the creepy neediness of someone being insular and asking to talk about food or television or something on /g/.

>>
the tablet part is basically useless on it's own
why didn't they just make 360° hinge if they want the penabled market so much?
>>
>>54992486

>why

Its already a thick tablet when detached, folding it would make it a useless brick no one would use as a tablet.
>>
looks nice on screen but the build quality is shit. the keyboard flex is unbelievable for a machine this price
>>
One of the worst designed things ever conceived.

They called it the surface book because it fucks up any surface you open it on unless you have a desk made of diamonds. It'll also just snap if its in a bag with anything due to not closing properly.

No reason to not get an X1 Yoga if you want tablet shit.
>>
>>54992309
>ghost bumped back when that was possible (posting to bump a thread, then instantly deleting the post
Good memories. I had perl scripts to do this, never slept, and trolled /a/ every day.

This was back in 06-07
>>
The price.

The rMBP is still justifiable, but this thing...
>>
No TrackPoint or something like it.
Hard to open and upgrade.
"Screen" wobble.

Those are really my only complaints.
>>
>>54988534
>i bought a laptop and now need to justify it to myself
>>
A macbook does all the same things minus the touchscreen and pen, while having the option of OSX and/or Windows 10 and Linux if need be. Hopefully it matures into a better product this year, but as of right now I don't see a reason to get this over a rMBP.

All this is said as a Surface Pro 3 owner and lover.
>>
>>54992842
that's the point it's already useless as a tablet
so why not make it a better laptop instead?
>>
why didn't they just build a normal laptop?
>>
My surface book will occasionally stop allowing me to use my keyboard at startup. I then need to reseat it to the keyboard and it works again.
