Would it be possible to transfer data using an aux cord from one computer to another? Kind of like SSTV, but faster?

I remember an hp graphing calculator in the 90's that could have programs transferred to it from a computer by holding the calculator (which had an ir transceiver) up to your computer screen and run a special program that would display rapid flashes.

some kid once got an ipod's firmware by using a thing that the ipod had that made sounds, somehow making the ipod code the firmware into sounds, recording it and decoding with his computer or something like that
