I'm partial to Elitebooks, and for $400 you can get a decent one. Honestly you can't go wrong with an Elitebook or Thinkpad as long as it's in good condition.

For slightly more (480) I got the hp Pavilion. It's honestly a great discount laptop. Using it for 3 months now and it hasn't disappointed me. If you don't care that much about a beautiful display and amazing build quality, would highly recommend.

I have an hp Dv7 elite.
The graphics card fried the first two mobos within 8 months. After that I set my gfx switching to only use the igpu and it's been great. Gfx card was a Radeon 5xxx series card. Super good at what it did, but not worth melting my laptop over. Have had it for maybe 5? Years. Installed an ssd myself and intend on putting in another 8gb of ram to make It 16. Hp claims it can only handle 8.... but both the mobo Manufacturer and Intel say their products handle 16 and 32 respectively. So idk.
Either way it's hit and miss with hp.
Hold on to your money and wait a year and get an AMD Zen apu laptop with a 1080p screen
