Good thing I've got both, then.

...is a great adjunct to a computerised heuristic-and-signature-based scanner, but presents only a first line of defence.

Defence in depth is key here. You are only human. Your attackers are not. You have to be right every time. They only hace to be lucky once. They'll take the low hanging fruit first sure, but they'll take whatever they can get: that includes you, your delicious credentials and machines, your Bitcoin wallets, whatever.

If you're on Linux then appropriate permissions, keeping your kernel and system completely up to date, and possibly systemd namespacing and/or rule-based MAC systems like Ubuntu's AppArmor or selinux will probably do.

If you're on Windows, I personally recommend: EMET for extended exploit mitigations; ESET NOD32 Antivirus as an efficient partial-sandbox-based real-time scanner based on both signatures and pretty good heuristics, written in assembly language and as efficient as a good AV can be; and occasional scans with MalwareBytes AntiMalware, which specialises in the peakier threats and is also good as a front-end cleanup tool in first response; and uBlock Origin as an ad blocker, which is pretty much mandatory due to the prevalance of drive-by malware in advertisig networks that they (deliberately, in some cases) do a piss-poor job of policing.

I also suggest enabling hardware NX for all processes, not just Windows (off by default). If an old game wants to run self-inducing code add it to the exceptions. System properties, Advanced, DEP.

Yes, KAV is a good alternative to NOD32 there: bit slower, slightly wider heuristics, slightly higher false-positive rate (NOD's is very low).

Stick to Kaspersky

Does more malware.

Kaspersky and malware bytes will find a great bunch of shit.

Also Bitdefender is amazing.

Might want to give webroot a shot.

Been using it for quite some time now, very fast, very lightweight.

Install gentoo.

Not bad advice here.

Personally I'm off the mindset "Why would I put resource drains like security software on my gaming rig?" Obviously something doing on-access scanning is safer but if you put a suite of decent standalone scanners on an external storage device and run it at fairly frequent intervals you really don't have to worry about it.

Seriously, how hard is it to just leave your machine on at night with some deep scrubbing running?
