What is the future of computer operating systems /g/?

Wouldn't it make more sense if companies all contributed to a single platform? That way you wouldn't have the fragmentation between windows and *nix systems. There could be base versions for

>muh gaymes
>muh programs
>muh servers

I understand that there would be a need for different tools for server and lay user but seriously it doesn't make sense. Wouldn't systems be more advanced with everyone contributing to the same project? Which OS would make more sense to work off of? Does it exist?
