Hi, /g/, I'm considering installing another Linux distro (I'm currently on Arch). What should I install and why?

Gentoo

Linux is a kernel newfag.
Typical clueless Archfag.
>>
Why wouldn't you want to install Gentoo? Maintaining a source based distro is definitely the way to go. I was an Arch nemesis before I was enlightened.
>>
>>54949415
Gentoo, Slackware, LFS, etc.
Or try FreeBSD

Linux mint.
It all works out of the box, this lets you forget everything you've learned about advanced linuxing, so you can have the fun of learning it again later.
>>
>>54950192
Using Arch isn't advanced. I consider it novice-intermediate.

You'll install it successfully one of these times.

I didn't see what made gentoo worth the hassle.
Maybe that's just me.
To each his own.

arch is best linux
>>
>>54950302
Then it's not for you and it's not a hassle. Handling a source based distro gives you more control over how software is installed on your machine and optimizes it for peak performance. Also the Gentoo community is more professional than the Arch community. Each one has their bad apples. (Especially the FreeBSD community.) *Also Arch only supports Systemd for the init... Nuff said.

Literally gentoo. I moved from Arch to gentoo years ago and haven't looked back.

>>54953355
Yeah, I love USE flags. I also love setting my own CFLAGS and Gentoo's masking policy is awesome. We even get our own SSL that other distros don't have. It's also super flexible and has amazing support for different hardware configurations.
>>
>>54949415

OpenRC Arch, or Manjaro.

Stray away from Systemd my friend.
>>
>>54949415
install gentoo because systemd is shit

install voidlinux if you're too much of a pussy to install gentoo because sytemd is shit

install freebsd if you don't like to game because systemd is shit
>>
>>54953612
Gentoo can be installed without Systemd.
>>
Gentoo is obviously not worth the hassle at all, but it's actually pretty fun to install and maintain if all you are looking for is to learn about Linux and tinker with it go for it.

If you want to get shit done go for Fedora or Ubuntu.

Slackware. Because Bob.

Debian already is usable.

Arch isn't supported to run without Systemd... I'm pretty sure Manjaro isn't either.

Guys, Ubuntu Gnome is the best option. I'm using it right now.
>>
>>54954179
Manjaro "supports" openrc as much as a distro that doesn't care to maintain shit supports anything, arch doesn't support it but it is possible to get it working, not flawlessly.
>>
>>54953701
What hassle? Maintaining a source based distro is for advanced users.

On Lubuntu now, have used this and Funtoo for years. Missing Funtoo again and probably going to make a build server for it so my laptop won't sound like a hair dryer compiling updates.

Install gentoo.

It's not that much of a step up from arch. I managed it from debian. Just follow instructions.

Portage was annoying at first, but now I find USE flags so fun. Best package manager imo.

This is supposed to be a pretty big-name distro but I've never heard of anyone actually using it.

Arch is fine. You probably just want to try a new DE or WM.

Leave your CFLAGS vanilla, so your package builds are more universally compatible in the AUR.
Oh, wait...

Welcome to the community friend. I hope you enjoy your stay. You've probably noticed that every community has their bad apples but so far Gentoo is the most kind and professional. Did you set your own CFLAGS? I'm running stable / hardened here.
>package.accept_keywords
example: Anything proceding the tilda ~amd64
would be considered testing. You may want to read up some more on Portage just in case you have issues with circular dependencies in the future. Usually they're pretty easy to solve.
