Hey /g/, I could use your suggestions.

I've purchased a Sennheiser PC 350 SE, and I'm looking to get the most out of them on a PC. I've heard you need either a DAC or a sound card with a built in amp. I'm not a super audiophile or anything, I just want good quality. That being said, money's not really an obstacle to a point ($100 and under is fine), I just don't want to waste money on overpriced stuff if /g/ knows better options.

Currently, looking at the E10k. The only question I haven't found reliably answered by googling is whether or not the mic will work fine still plugged into the on-board soundcard. I wouldn't think it'd need as much power as the headphones themselves, but I am not well versed in audio technology, and the results I've found from googling have been very mixed, some saying it's a huge hassle, it doesn't work right, others saying it's perfectly fine and they have no issues using the onboard for mic and a DAC for the headphones.

Thanks in advance, sorry for being so long winded.

A DAC is a digital to analogue converter, which turns the bits on your computer into hearable music. Your motherboard has one built in.

Just posting this to clear up some confusion you might have. I know I did when I was buying my first amp.

I'm not sure I understand. What should I be looking for to get the most out of the headphones, then?

Oh, I think I see now, all headphone amplifiers are also DACs, but not all DACs are amplifiers?

Nope. DACs and amps are dedicated components of an audio system which are sometimes integrated into one.

So, what's the best headphone amp out there for $100 or under?

Nice powered stereo system for under 100$!

Fiio products are considered good starter dac/amps so you are good whit the e10k.

Get an apogee groove. It's a DAC and amp in a small package that's portable and sounds substantially better than anything built in. I use some old AKG open backs with it as well as the new R70x from AT and it can get anything seriously loud without compressing.
