I'm considering buying a used work station on eBay and adding a graphics card for gaming and work purposes.

You can get shit like
>3GHz Xenon Processors
>12+ GB of ram
>1TB + hard drive
for around $150 or even below a lot of the time.
The thing is that most of them don't come with a good graphics card.

So which graphics card nowadays will run most games?

Gtx 1080 founders edition

750ti will do most shit on medium settings at 1080p
not AAA titles, but i use mine for BF3 and terraria

Used workstations are a great idea if you don't care much about power consumption
Anyways, the RX480 is your best bet price/performance, but it launches in a month or so
If you need it now used 290 or better, or used 970 or better is your best bet, both of those will plummet price wise when the RX480 launches though
So just wait a month

I'm not necessarily getting that work station in the pic, just whatever comes up as the best value on eBay.

one thing to be careful of, the power supply may not have enough 6 Pin PCI-E connectors to power your card, depending on the vintage of the machine; I've got a HP Z620, it comes with 2x 6 Pin cables, and is capable of driving a R9-390X, with a 6->8Pin cable. do your research to see what it can drive.

HP Z400's seem decently abundant now. Is it true that a GTX 960 card will work on them?

What about later cards of that series?

the z400 came with 2 psu's a 475w part and a 600w part, it also has 1x 6pin PCI-e Power cable; your mileage may vary,

Fuck. I'm thinking of doing the same but not gaming, just running a fuckton of monitors with dual gpus. Probably going to get a Thinkstation d30 because https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Xeon+E5-2670+v3+%40+2.30GHz&id=2337&cpuCount=2

But they go for ~$700 right now. Might get a d20 instead.

my S20 has been pretty good to me, will probably be using it until 2020 or even beyond

Kek. Future proofing is what im buying for. As long as there arent any drastic improvements in cpus within 7 to 10 years its a forever machine.
