Why not just use a VPN and a fake identity to use gmail? Most free services are using your info as the method by which they pay for their servers.
You can always just run your own email server but the security and reliability becomes entirely up to you.

Free VPN services do the same thing google does and they use your info to pay for their shit. You could always go through TOR I guess but you have to block all javascript or else your browser is going to leak identifying information.
I'm not familiar enough with tor to know all the ins and outs. So i'm not sure if DNS leaking is an issue for TOR like it is for VPN's.
I prefer to use a paid VPN that I get through cash I converted to bitcoins but you can also do it through gift cards paid through cash. The issue then becomes finding a VPN that's trusted.

I have successfully persuaded one of my family members to use Silence for text messaging so I encrypt all text contact with him by default.
