> My little Johnny is a computer genius meme

When I was a kid, I had to use DOS and type in commands to get my games to work. Not to mention that if a kid nowadays even thinks about opening a terminal or command prompt, retarded parents and teachers automatically think OMG HAX0R! SUSPENDED FROM SCHOOL!!!

Are future generations fucked /g/?
>>
My first computer was this old thing that used floppy disks and had a picture of a floppy disk on the screen when it was empty, telling you to put in a disk. My disks were mosty games but I also had a word processor disk. The games were mostly platformers and clicky adventure games. My favorit ewas a multiplayer game with grey walls and red and blue guy, shooting eachother. Like 1980s call of duty or something.

Do you know what computer that is? Was it a commodore 64? I think it probably was but I'm not sure.It was a long time ago.
>>
I don't know, man. I was using Ubuntu when I was 8. Decompiling Flash games, modifing variable values and recompiling them. Making retarded, shitty applications in VB6 like web browsers, timers, etc. Had my first imageboard @ 11 and ran an IRC network when I was 12.

Ha! That would have been nice to have. But manually putting in the commands helped me learn. I had games like math blaster and Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego.

I loved the command prompt as a kid and took to Linux like a fish to water when I was at votech.

Maybe that's the solution. Make these kids go to votech in high school and middle school.

speaking of old games, I'm looking for a game I loved as a kid, but I somehow lost it, even though I still have the games folder from my first computer from '96. It was mostly a point and click adventure, had anthropomorphic cars, a lot of minigames and it ended with some kind of car parade.

Teaching kids how to be code monkeys isn't the same as either teaching them computer architecture or abstracting them from the hardware and having them do math basically. Token gestures for snowflake children. I concede it's better than nothing but should be put into proper perspective.

daily reminder that being a good programmer nowadays is all about the high level architecture and design, maybe some basic algorithms, and has nothing with computer architecture or math. I'm pretty comfortable with both and I still produce spaghetti code, because I could never get the OO design

The more I read from this article, the more annoyed I become. While this guy has a point considering the IT knowledge of most teenagers, the way he writes and portrays himself pisses me off. He knows how to install an OS, sometimes uses Ubuntu, knows what a proxy is and teaches networking at a school, what a pro hackz0r. Man, he really knows how to use a computer. Being surrounded by this filthy casual scum must suck so bad when you're literally the reincarnation of Dennis Ritchie.

One time in middle school i opened a cmd window in the computer lab and started playing around with the NET command.

I had recently learned you can send messages over IP with it, so stupidly i typed it net send * testing, and it showed up on every computer.

About 1 minute later I got a message sent to me via NET that said "you are being watched..."

When I was 10 I built a two toned siren with some parts I picked out of a rs component catalogue. It was basically a two mode astable multivibrator.

One thing I regret is never learning to program.

>A kid puts her hand up in my lesson. 'My computer won't switch on,' she says, with the air of desperation that implies she's tried every conceivable way of making the thing work. I reach forward and switch on the monitor, and the screen flickers to life, displaying the Windows login screen. She can't use a computer.

This happens a lot to me. I don't really let it get to me though. I might joke about it with my coworkers from time to time, but I've just accepted the fact that most people will be technologically-oblivious aside from using the most basic applications.

If you're good, then it's an easy way to make it work in your favor. I charge $50 an hour minimum when I do freelance work and they'll pay it if you'e good. In the end, it's still cheaper than taking your computer to Geek Squad only for them to tell you that you need a new one even though the only thing wrong with it is it needs a new battery.

You've missed the point of the article. It's not about his skills, it's about how despite the prevalence of technology, people still can't perform basic problem solving tasks if they are ill-equipped to handle the issue themselves (e.x., entering "restore my iphone contacts" into google) and refuse to learn the basics of computer safety. The "my computer won't turn on" one where the girl has the monitor powered off is more common and prevalent than people think.

Not fucked because they don't need to know. Computers and software will continue to become easier to use and more user friendly.

When I was 2, my cousin showed me how to find and open MS paint. From their I learned how to navigate on Windows. I was also fixing people's PC's (reinstalling Windows XP or virus scanning) when the lime wire craze became big at age 6-7. Jailbreaking phones at 8 when it was new. Hackintoshed my laptop at age 10. Built PC at 12 and learned visual basic. More things I did, but you all get it.

If I was born probably 6-8 years later, I wouldn't of known 1/8 the things I do now. It's because we were born in the right environment to do so.

Its not just about having been exposed to computers at a young age, its also that most people just don't give a shit.

I was awful at all things computer up until I was about 16, sure I'd messed with phones briefly or trying to skin windows xp, but it was just blind luck if it worked and I do recall getting destroyed by viruses.

Then one day I decided to build a PC for vidya and school so I bought the shit and put it together, since then it was fun so I actually learned multiple languages and took up tinkering with electronics.

People aren't incapable of doing this stuff, they just don't want to do it.

Back in New Zealand in 1997 my intermediate school used these 'acorn' computers. At one stage for a school project some of us were allowed to use a digital camera which stored photos on 3.5" floppy disks.

I decided to take as many photos as I could of a girl I liked, and I think you could only store a handful of photos per disk, so I came in one day with literally a pile of about 40 disks, but my homeroom teacher caught me and confiscated them, some of them hadn't been formatted so probably had my dad's work files and a few DOS games on them.

She refused to hand them back without talking to my parents first about my attempt to "hack the computer system" of the school and I was really upset, but on the last day of school, months later, after I'd mostly forgotten about them, she told me she had a "little present" to give me, and she handed me this giant pile of flopp disks tied up in a rubber band.
>>
>>54916303

Forgot to add that I only managed to get a single disk of photos of this girl I liked, and it was among the disks confiscated. I have it to this day, but can never see the photos because I don't have an acorn computer to access the files. Or the disk has been corrupted.

>>

>"God is not real"

I agree with most of that picture, but this is too much. The 90's internet was full of lively discussion on philosophical and religious issues, including 'edgy atheism'. Some of my best memories are of IRC chatrooms on Dalnet in the 90's with funny, intelligent 'edgy atheists', and there were certainly less funny, more 'autistic' doctrinaire ones too. The communication of ideas was a central draw.
