Times change family. I used to think having more than 1GB of RAM in ~2005 was fucking insane. Now look at us, shitdroid can't even run with 1GB of RAM and having less than 8GB of RAM on a desktop causes programs to run out of memory over time.

Wirth's law may be real, I'm not really sure but desktop RAM is getting cheaper and 2GB RAM phones can be had for under $100 so I don't really care.

its not bloat. its necessary. rendering just takes vast amounts of ram. a lossless 1080p video takes about 12 gigabytes per minute and for doing good video editing having the full thing in ram preview is essentially necessary. i'm upgrading to 384gb ram sometime this year.

>I only play games
So? Utilize that RAM as a RAM disk and set up your computer to copy whatever game you're into at the time entirely to the RAM disk, then enjoy load screens ceasing to exist. Seriously a DDR4 RAM disk would have a sequential read/write rate of 12,800-19,200 MB/s vs the ~500 MB/s of whatever SSD you have (unless you have a PCIe SSD in which case it's a bit more).

>>
>>54918032
I don't think there has ever been even one generalization here that fully covers the whole userbase of anything. There will be exceptions. It can still be true enough to get mentioned in the first place, without just being a filthy liar. I think people who value aesthetics over high specs are over 50% of the users, even if it's not even close to 100%.
>>
>>54918164
Even so on a technology board of all places one should assume that the user is not a member of the shitty side of the userbase.

No. Only RAM being used is powered. On smartphones, however, the RAM is different, so all of it is always powered.

8gb 1600 ddr3. Good enough for me. If I put my two old 2gb sticks I will have 12gb but they only run at 1333.

depends on what

Desktop 16GB (because games)

Laptop 4gb (because i don't game on this thing at all)

there is a huge difference in Ram needs and yes i video edit on my leptop for 480p and works just fine.

Might upgrade my ram pn my desktop just for the lulz,

But if you live in eastern Europe or in the Middle East, you have to pay much more for computer equipment. Our salaries are really low and if you're on minimum wage, you cab barely afford to pay the bills, let alone upgrade your pc

Still, I've been thinking about fitting another two sticks.

I wanted to upgrade to 16gb for one purpose: GPU passthrough. I would guess 8GB fall short when I can't take all that RAM to that virtual machine anyways.

Issue is, my integrated graphics are -terrible-. I would guess it's a real waste of time to do something like constantly switching graphics.

8GB's is enough for the majority of basic stuff. Even with a few chrome tabs, and a handful of things running in the background im only at about 4.5gb's used on Windows 10.

I build all mine with 16gb's, mainly for games and other more demanding programs. Plenty for me.

Hey /g/.

I play current releases sometimes. I like having a multimonitor setup to play something while having some youtube shit at the background (normally really long hangouts or video podcasts).

Sometimes I do notice that my PC is choking a little bit with 8GB with such shit open. However, do you think this would be related to RAM or in this case VRAM?

>DDR3 is so fucking cheap nowadays
I just had to spent 70€ on 16GB at 1866 MHz and 2133 or so DDR4 costs the same.

DDR3 is stoping production, so the price will go higher for two years or so (not much more than 10€~, but stil will go up), and then go down again.

Of course, talking about new/unused stuff, I could have find the same for 40€ or even less used.

4gb for basic tasks and shit posting
8gb for pretty much anything
16gb for lots of multi tasking. the extra space also helps with file caching which makes repetitive tasks so much faster.

16gb on desktop, 8gb on laptop and 8gb on surface pro 3. Got the 16gb back when 8gb was $35 for 2x4gb sticks (currently $100+ for 8gb in australia). Have an old hp laptop with 4gb that just runs windows 10 to mess around with.

I run 32GB minimum.
32 on my ESX box
32 on the OriginPC box I built
32 on the desktop I have.

> but anon, why so much?
VMs, son. ESX is self-explanitory. The other two run win10. The only reason I'm using win10 is because Hyper-V Client is fucking awesome. Fuck virtualbox and fuck paying for VMware workstation.
>>
>>54909209
On my laptop right now, 8 GB (which is probably slightly under, because the "GB" varies).

Have 16 of DDR3 on my desktop because it's cheap, by the time I build a new PC I'll probably do 32 or 64 because why the fuck not?
