opinions about user interface aside, which would you recommend? particularly concerning performance and stability. I fear since win 7 hit EOL it will degrade over time and I will get no support from M$.

windows 7 won't hit EOL before 2020, and you can still continue using it beyond then if you have Common Sense installed
Stick with 7. I have 8.1 and it's unusable because of how the mouse pointer jumps all over the place. You can't use it for gaming, you can't use it for creating or styling graphics or anything that requires a steady or precise hand. It's a piece of shit.

I used to run 8 and I didn't have this mouse pointer problem, but I jumped ship to OS X 3 years ago so I'm out of the loop. Did this happen to you on multiple devices? Maybe it was just a lazer mouse and soft mousepad? Just checking, I assume you know more than me about your own computer
