http://www.theregister.co.uk/2016/06/01/teamviewer_mass_breach_report/

>TeamViewer users say their computers were hijacked and bank accounts emptied after the software company's systems mysteriously fell offline. TeamViewer denies it has been hacked.

>In the past 24 hours, we've seen a spike in complaints from people who say their PCs and servers were taken over via the widely used remote-control tool on their machines. Even users with strong passwords and two-factor authentication enabled on their TeamViewer accounts say they were hit.

>It appears miscreants gained control of victims' TeamViewer web accounts, and used those to connect into computers, where they seized web browsers to empty PayPal accounts, access webmail, and order stuff from Amazon and eBay.

>"Hackers got everything from me," Doug, an Idaho-based Twitch streamer who was looking forward to celebrating his birthday today with his wife and two kids, told The Register.

>"They remote connected in at 5AM MT, went into my Chrome and used my PayPal to buy about $3k worth of gift cards. And yes, I had two-factor authentication."

>Over on Reddit, people were lining up with tales of their systems being compromised via TeamViewer, sparking fears the platform had been hacked. TeamViewer makes remote-control clients for Windows, OS X, Linux, Chrome OS, iOS and Android.

Christ on a bike I installed this for the first time yesterday to use it for a few hours.

>>
>>54869507
Na, you see, they used Remember me options on their computers for things like Paypal and other shit, so when the hackers gained control of their computers they didn't need to auth themselves to do transactions.

This is basically just a security 101 lesson for people. I'm willing to bet a bunch of these people slipped up and posted Teamviewer info publicly as well, either in screenshots or streamed, so that hackers only had to do minimum effort to log in.

>>
>>54870371
What?
2fa usually covers logins. The general idea is that if you use Remember me it would only be on a home computer. Often 2fa systems will also take into account your IP so if your computer got stolen and they connect from a new IP/different range it would hit them up with a reauth message.

But it really just comes down to the fact that they left a remote login system running which wasn't adequately secured. User stupidity.

I seriously doubt that TeamViewer was hacked; I have several PCs running it with no signs of bad activity, but I use a 16 character password with uppercase/lowercase/Symbols/Numbers so I assume that's why.

I also don't reuse passwords across services. I assume the Myspace and Linkedin breaches were the main reasons, along with password reuse.

today I needed to print multiple jpgs and pngs into a pdf due to ridiculous requirement in a recruiment website's guidelines stating that all attachments have to be pdfs. So I pressed F12 to bring down a console, wrote
> cd folder
> convert *.* file.pdf
and I got the pdf in seconds. On windows I would've opened the file explorer, navigated my way into the folder which had my attachments, selected all files, pressed right mouse button, select print, select save as pdf, select output folder, and so on

in many cases working in ttys is superior to guis

Broken ass English is very sign of Prajeet. Not being able to run ssh in X mode is very sign of Prajeet.

It's a shame companies only notice Prajeet's salary when calculating his cost. If they factored in their shit getting hacked because Prajeet only knows how to use a back door to get remote access to a computer, then jobs might quit getting outsourced.

Check your teamviewer logs for starters. In any case, the pajeets who were 'hacking' used very simple tools.

They loggin at some random time, use a very simple password viewer to show all passwords in firefox/chrome/explorer and then proceed to empty your paypal account. Just check the logs for 'webbrowserpassview.exe'.
Having a master password doesnt help you.

Why do you keep it running when you're not using it?
Have the companies or your bank refunded you yet?

Non-victim who ran it as a service here.

I used it to manage JDownloader 2 while at work without having to figure out JDownloader's remote feature, which I assume would have been blocked on company wifi anyway.

I'd use pushbullet to send an rss article from a pirate site to my Firefox, TeamViewer into the pc, fetch the bitlocker links (yes I still dl locally this way for a few reasons), and get JDownloader started, then disconnect

If you really want a botnet, Chrome can do remote desktop.

Assuming a Windows install, Google (cause I forgot) how to find (or search your computer) for TeamViewer log file. Look for unrecognized ip addresses or times you're unlikely to have connected.

From the looks of it you're most at risk if:
> your TeamViewer password is one previously compromised in the earlier LinkedIn or related hacks

> you run TeamViewer as a service (meaning always waiting for you to connect whenever your PC is on
>>
>reusing passwords
>saving login details in a browser
>leaving a remote control daemon running 24/7
>>
I don't know what to switch to at this point.
I mean I haven't had any problems with teamviewer but vulnerabilities just puts me on the edge, the fact that teamviewer is a proprietary piece of shit is enough already to try to ignore

I remote desktop from my laptop to desktop whenever I need to check up on whatever I'm doing on my desktop, and Windows Remote Desktop takes over sound, display, everything, doesn't like multi-monitor setup or directx applications running

I also access from my phone as well whenever I'm on the go and I need to check up on something or manage files

Google Remote Desktop is there and the closest one I can switch to but hasn't been very reliable to me as most of the time my PCs just appeared offline even when chrome is running

I don't know any real alternative other than LogMeIn but they're pretty much the same boat as TeamViewer in terms of proprietary freeware & protocols

Don't give that fucking shitweasel a real answer. If he's too dumb to figure out security on his own he can keep using teamviewer, like a dumbass. No amount of angsty, over confident, shitposts will fix the fact that there is a "support team" somewhere that doesn't understand basic system security.

That's like being a chef and not knowing what a fork is. I hope he gets raped by teamviewer pajeets and ends up homeless, getting butt railed by crooked head tyrone for a few tugs from the bottle of MD2020 tyrone found in the parking lot earlier in the day. He, and his team, are a pox on IT and are part of the reason pajeets have run rampant the last ten years.

Fuck him and his dumb ass team and the botnet they rode in on.

It's not mentioned in this thread yet but TeamViewer has been hacked for at least the past 3 months. I recommend looking for backdoors or reinstalling.

If only Chrome would allow me to add 'friend' computers... but it does not. And getting computer illiterates to open their Chrome, and giving me the ID number?

That ain't gonna ever work.
So yeah, I try to rely on Chrome's Remote and UltraVNC, but they only get me so far.
The illiterates require something with no remote interaction. Chrome Remote WOULD BE fucking perfect, IF I could just add my PCs.

But I can't. I can only add computers that have my Chrome profile sync'd. But who the fuck would do that?
>>
>>54903082
Why not make a Chrome profile just for remoting?
>>
>>54899939
No. These customers insist that I use it because other companies already rely on it. I wouldn't mind having some sort of a VNC solution.
But hassle free is really what it boils down into and that's why people are going to keep using it. It doesn't matter if we like it or not.

>Why would anyone willingly permanently run 3rd party remote software
This was the question. I gave you an answer.
>>
I use Microsoft RDP on my Windows Professional OS.
>>
>>54903468
Uhm... yeah but got my gmail blocked a few times already due to "misuse", like I used one only to receive these junk mails, so I am not so sure.

Can't understand why they have to restrict it so much.
>>
>>54903676
> have to port forward

RPD should be only used with OpenVPN - or maybe with ssh port forwarding. But it should never be put on an open network.
I did use it like this with a throwaway server, but yeah.

>>54899939
You cannot just install ANY VNC remotely. Let alone port forward it, and set it up.
Teamviewer offers all this, in one package.
That's why it's so popular.
>>
>>54897025
Fuck that, I pump VNC through SSH.
Problem solved.

I had some random person connect to a VM running TeamViewer a few years ago.

I disabled the random password generator in TeamViewer and had my own generated strong password.

I was sitting there looking at it and person just connects and looks up a chinese company and could see them pause to try and figure what was going on.

I killed connection and removed anything of value off the VM and rebooted the VM and waited for it to happen again. Never had another connection, the ID in TeamViewer did change the next time I opened it, which was weird. Never trusted it again.
