RED, if not RE4s.

Purple for surveillance cameras

Why does WD have 5% the sample size of seagate and HGST?

Is toshiba literally a single order for some reason toshiba fanboy sysadmin?

because they operated as an independent company until very recently

interestingly all of wd's senior management have been replaced with hgst people

Blackblaze even said that the sample sizes for WD aren't enough to draw any conclusions.

Literally every of these graphs says something different.

Any other good brands though?
>>
>>54819126

The question isn't if you want to store data, but where, how quiet you want it to be, how much power you want it to draw, and how fast you need to retrieve it.
>>
>>54819142
SAS won't benefit you.
>>
>>54819161
where doesn't matter, but preferrably quiet, fast, and reliable. (and not as expensive as SSDs are at the moment)

>>

hgst or wd black for normal storage

you can use wd black or hgst for backup if your rich tho
>>
>>54819036
The chart is retarded fud. They compare hard disks meant for different tasks, like NAS drive to general consumer disks.
>>
>>54819321
Doesn't matter too much. Just get a drive that is made for 24/7 raid use. Theire firmware doensnt try to correct read errors that would cause trouble in RAID.

I use 5 WD Red 4TB in Raid Z1
>>
>>54818960
I have a 256gb seagate that's almost 10 years old, it just werks.
>>
>>54819257
Yes, but that has nothing to do with SAS. SAS is used because it is full duplex.
>>
>>54819457
Yeah because manufacturing quality doesn't change over time or anything

Just look at HGST, their old drives are known as Deathstars and with good reason, today they make the best HDDs money can buy.
>>

black for performance
red for the 5 year warranty

otherwise just buy an HGST
>>

Its a shame they sold to wd, if only they had actually good marketing and availability
>>

high volume, low margin commodity products
>>
>>54819584

That's what HGST is.
>>
>>54819513
Enterprise drives are durable because they're meant to be accessed 24/7 and still last a reasonable time.
SAS is used because it scales way better than SATA.
>>
>>54818927
Black is also more reliable.

Blues above 1TB are rebranded greens.

>>54818960
The 2016 ones are Reds. The earlier ones may be too.
Blackblaze isn't a good source since reds aren't supposed to be used in a high vibration enterprise environments.

Either Black or Re.
Don't cheap out
HGST is also good.

SAS drives are just another way of saying enterprise drives, because no serious enterprise would use SATA.
SAS being full duplex as opposed to SATA has nothing to do with why it's the preferred protocol.

No, it isn't.
>SAS being full duplex as opposed to SATA has nothing to do with why it's the preferred protocol.
It's a huge reason along with I/O multipathing for expansion/failover. Interface technology has nothing to do with individual drive reliability.

Get Greens and take the time to disable parking with WDIDLE3

They're ideally the same drive, with Reds having maybe one or two features that Greens don't have that ends up being negligible when it comes to perfomance

Also, read the memo--Greens are Blues now
>>
>>54821778
Buy new ones then? If you want reliability and speed then you shouldn't be worrying about noise.

Enterprise stuff always comes with an elevated price tag. If you don't like the noise and pride tag stick with any cheap sub 7200rpm drive.

HP DL380 G6s don't like oddly reported SMART data, they ramp the fans up to 100%. I don't think they're the best drives, but they were cheaper than the HGST 7K1000s where I got them from and I knew they wouldn't fuck anything up. They're just bulk storage for FreeNAS, I don't use mechanical drives for my ESXi datastores.
>>
>>54823456
Any.

>>54823406
So they wouldn't give away that feature in a lower priced green drive. Reds and greens/blues are pretty much identical except TLER and maybe some firmware changes.

Deskstars werent even made by HGST back then.

>Deathstar-tier

As long as you disable head parking completely, Greens are very good for the price. Last a couple of years easily. If you have your HDD set to turn off when not used for an hour, they'll last even longer.

Purples are meant to be put in devices that do continuous writes, like security cameras. Not sure how much snake oil that is, though.

Reds are awesome for storage, basically they are half way between Greens and RE enterprise drives.

Black is worthless.

Blue is an average cheap drive for low-end systems, neither good nor bad.
>>
>>54824043
>So, then, what is your point? You said they were identical, but they're not.

My point is reds are greens with some software tweaks and definitely not worth the price difference.
>>
That's neat but the 7200.7 wasn't renowned for fucking dying real quick.
>>
>>54824314
Iunno if this has changed recently but at least back in the Caviar days Greens were the lower binned, cheaper drives that failed, basically became a meme for being deathstar-tier. Maybe that's changed with the new ones but I'd much sooner buy a Blue than a Green.
>>
>>54824367
>definitely not worth the price difference.
They become worth their weight in gold when TLER allows the drive to not drop out of your array. Thanks for playing, though. Also there are no 1TB 2.5" Greens.
>>
I know that a few years ago someone figured out that Blacks are just Blues with a better warranty. Literally the same drive with a different sticker.
