If I want to play video games good, and I have about a $500 budget for GPU + CPU, should I spend more on the GPU, more on the CPU, or equal amount of money for each?
Can anyone recommend any parts to buy right now? I was looking at the Core i5-4690K. I haven't looked at GPUs yet.
It has been 8 years since I built my last PC and my Intel® Core™2 Quad Processor Q9400 is about to catch on fire at this point.

i5-6400/gtx1070 (non-founders edition) will be a little more than $500 but is bound to be very good value
cpu overclocking doesn't add all that much to gaming performance in comparison to what you have to pay for it (unlocked chip, compatible mobo, aftermarket cooler, maybe also a better psu). once you've got an i5 you're better off putting as much money as you can into the gpu.

The i5 6600K is better (slightly). But you should not get either, if you want maximum gaming performance. The i5 6400, and the GTX 1070, or the new AMD cards, once they are released. For most games, the GPU is more important than the CPU.

970 is a perfectly fine card for 1080p, but with new cards on the horizon you should not buy it at current prices. It will either go down in price, or you can get the new cards. I would wait!

1070 is going to be released on the 10th of June, and AMD's press conference is on the 1st of June, so you have very little to wait. You can buy the rest of your PC now, and just use the iGPU (or your current card) for a short while.

Most likely. The 1080 has been out of stock since it was available for pre-order, and the 1070 is cheaper. Big new launches always get sold out for a while.
