Is VMWare really better than VirtualBox?

Trying to run a Linux guest on a Windows host
>>

No
>>
>>54810865
In my experience, it really depends on your particular machine

For some computers, vmware seems to outperform virtualbox, and vice versa for other computers.

Try them both out, and see which you like better.

then they're identical. VMWare gets way better when you have to maintain a system with many virtual machines
>>
>>54810884
I'm apprehensive to install this torrented VMWare. I want to know if it's worth the risk over VirtualBox.
>>
>>54810898
I can't speak for the paid version; the free VMWare Player works fine for my needs

qemu/kvm master race reporting in.

I use Vbox because it's free software and respects my freedom. Also, because I can never figure out to get qemu and kvm working.

You're doing it backwards, anon
>>
>>54810865
Well yeah it is better, but whether you need any of its features is probably a better question.

Also, VMWare Server is free, might be a bit dated though. If you have a machine to dedicate to it, ESXi is free too.

eh, fuck you.

I bet you've paid for Windows. Or did you think it was free because it 'came with' the PC?
>>
>>54811691
I have literally never paid for any software or media in my entire life

No.

qEmu might be, though.
>>
>>54811771
You've never bought a laptop?

Tell me, what laptop is a piece of software?

Refurbished laptops only, never OEM
>>
>>54811812
lol. Yeah, you only pay the worst software manufacturers, like Microsoft. Good to see you taking a stand for 'freedom'. Fucking retard.
>>
>>54810898
Just run it in a virtual machine.
>>
>>54811082
It's not free tho

I got no complaints about using VirtualBox for that.

I used VMWare Workstation for years as a professional software engineer. Tons of usage, jumping between branched snapshots (testing our software on various OS + Office versions). I never, *ever* had any problem with it.

I tried using VBox for my own stuff when I went independent. Various version of Windows, a few Linux VMs. Every one of my first set of VMs has been corrupted by VirtualBox. I've had it refuse to import an existing VM after building a new system.

In my experience, VirtualBox is a flaky P.O.S. and I don't trust it. I'd rather pirate VMWare.

Finally a qualified comment
>>
>>54810865
Not sure about Linux guests, but for Windows guests the answer is 100% VirtualBox. Like people said, try both.

same, tried VirtualBox and it started echoing network traffic to random interfaces then BSOD my Windows host within an hour

seriously read some benchmarks, VMware makes VBox look like a joke

Everything is better than VirtualBox.
Hyper-V is very solid if you're on Windows 8.1/10 Pro.

>Linux

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
