In the market for a new, thin laptop, ultrabook, 2-in-1, whatever for college.

Mostly for taking notes and casual use, got a beast of a rig at home so don't care too much about graphical performance.

Kind of interested in a Microsoft Surface Pro 4 but there've been some reports they're coming out with a Surface Pro 5 with a $999 model that comes with an i7.

Anyone got any laptops they'd recommend?

Yes, but I read somewhere that I can use speeds higher than 2300 or whatever the highest speed Intel says the CPU can read. Should I worry about my computer not working if I try to use 3200 DDR4? Will that work?

Alright, so I'm trying to salvage 2 LG photo screens, like the kind put up in stores used for advertisement. I plan on hooking them up to use as monitors or just to display info.

I have several questions: What kind of cable is this, and what kind of adapter does it need? It comes straight out of the screen's motherboard, and I can provide more info and pictures if needed.

Laptops are shit and overpriced. Buy a NUC if you want something fancy, or buy an old Dell Optiplex/HP Prodesk for super cheap on eBay.

>>
>>54806537
For a laptop, and for the price point? Yeah they're good. Super fast boot up, long battery life, no worries about viruses, does everything you need to do when you're mobile.

Worst case scenario if you hate it and no one will buy it from you, you're only out $250. A decent traditional laptop is at least 2.5x that.

Are the cheapass 2560x1440 A- korean monitors still worth it? And if so, does anybody know if this particular brand can overclock to ~120hz, and if an extra $20 is worth it for a matte instead of glossy screen?

I know there's a bit of a risk involved with getting a good one, but saving $200 and still getting a near identical monitor (for what I'd be doing with it) seems like a pretty good deal

>>54806799
It's still a form of overclocking, just slightly different from how most components overclock now. Some monitors are capable of handling high refresh rates like 120hz without a significant loss in image quality, and seem to work just fine without killing it over time, since tons of people still run the monitors at 120hz years after they've purchased it

Install classic shell, and you can tweak the UI shit. They are using the flat design because its not cpu/gpu intensive, and it can get uniformity across all apps and vendors.

It doesnt rely on AERO anymore, which was a process hog.

If its that bad install a skin/theme/etc

How can I calculate the wattage of my cpu given I have the live voltage? I know it's amp*v but I don't know the operational amperage of the cpu.

Alternatively, can anyone link me to something like a Kill-A-Watt meter for 220V on amazon? Everything I find is for 110V and the only one I found for 220V costs $90. Most kill-a-watts that do the job are like $20-50. I'd love to get accurate readings of what wattage idle devices and such are consuming, or even my pc under load.

There are many different viewpoints that could fit in your description.

For me, the thing that's good about 'anonymity' on 4chan isn't that I'm truly anonymous, it's that it makes it easier to post (no logins) and you are generally anonymous to the other users of the board.

Free software has nothing to do with anonymity, in fact if you make and share free software you have raised your profile.

I like free software first because it's free, but secondarily because it's easier to audit and fix problems, and because it's a community effort.

I need a new GPU (Using a 7950 atm) and I'm thinking about the upcoming 1080s, but I'm wondering if the 980s will see a large price drop because of 'em? I'm also worried about getting a brand new card that could have issues.

I was having issues with my Intel drivers crashing often on my laptop (Running Windows 10 Pro), but my PC blue screened after trying to update a driver through device manager. The blue scrren shows a 100% complete message after about half a minute, along with pnp_detected_fatal_error, but it just stays on the blue screen afterwards. The same thing happens when I try to restart. Booting into my Fedora partition works just fine, but I would like to be able to access my files on Windows again. When I try to boot into safe mode, it asks for my bitlocker key, but I have been unable to find it on any of my flash drives. Is my only option at this point to reinstall Windows, or is there anything else that might work? Nothing that I've found online so far has helped.

Freshly graduated CS guy here. Am I gonna need a smartphone to get hired? Will companies provide one for me? What's the situation with that?

I've been getting away with a candy bar phone that costs me $15 a year, and I would rather not up my spending.
>>

I don't know, but my employer's rules don't allow feature phones to access email because they can't run anti-malware.
>>
>>54808637
Depends on the company, I know many will supply you a smartphone and will not allow you to use your personal one for work due to security concerns. Though in these cases you can often request what kind of device you want and they may or may not grant it.

Otherwise I don't think you will NEED a smartphone to get hired, a cellphone is probably a must. Even if you do once you have a job it shouldn't be hard to get one right? It's not like the HR guy is going to make you whip it out to make sure you're properly equipped before hiring you.

1440p will be forgotten about soon since it isn't as marketable as 4k

4k is like 4 1080p screens in one, it's good if you want a lot of screen space or if you sit close to your monitor

i don't know how old your PC is, but buying a 4k monitor could mean buying a new gpu, a 4k screen has about 6.3 times the amount of pixels your current monitor does

it's probably not worth it

Sometimes you don't have a generic version of your class that all the other ones will inherit from, nor do you necessarily want one. You might have a group of related classes that all share some similar properties and can be interacted with in similar ways, in those cases you can implement an interface in those classes to mark them as being part of that group of things.

Yeah, you can do the same thing if you have a generic base class and have subclasses of it which inherit, but this doesn't always make a lot of sense and you might not want to encourage other users who might implement your class to do so down the line.

You cannot change a user account by just changing the name. Just changing the name will make a cosmetic change only and not affect the underlying files/folders in the profile.

1. From an account with administrative privileges, go to Control Panel>User Accounts and create the new Standard user account named the way you want and at least one extra Administrator account. Call the latter "CompAdmin" or "Tech" or the like.
2. Log into the new Standard user account once so the profile files/folders are created and then log into CompAdmin.
3. Now go to Control Panel>System>Advanced>User Profiles>Settings
4. You will see where you can copy user accounts. Copy the old account to the new one from there. Use the Browse to select your new account (C:\Users\newaccount).
5. Log into the new correctly named account and make sure all your stuff is there and that it works the way you want. When you are satisfied, you can log out and into CompAdmin and delete the old user account from Control Panel>User Accounts.

If you wish to log into your new, corrected account automatically, do this:

Start Orb>Search box>type: netplwiz [enter]
Click on Continue (or supply an administrator's password) when prompted by UAC

Uncheck the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to automatically log on by clicking on the desired account to highlight it and then hit OK. Enter the correct password for that user account (if there is one) when prompted. Leave it blank if there is no password (null).

Yes, Somewhat, no.

Why you wanna change your user folder name?
>>
>>54810969
I bought a new laptop, and I was transferring archives and data from the old one to the new one. In my old laptop, my folder name was C:\Users\MyName, and in the new one it is C:\My Name. This is making some things to not work properly, for example my playlists in foobar2000, because they're trying to use the old laptop's path. I don't want to configure everything again (that's why I was copying even the smallest configurations from the old one), so I was looking for a way to just change the folder name, since it's the "easiest" way to deal with my problem.
