Adding another layer of bug.
Thing might works on Android nicely but not in IOS or vice versa.
Also, WP is dead so why bother with Xamarin/C#.
Android Studio is complete garbage, even though the software its forked from is amazing.
IntelliJ is hands down the best IDE I've ever used.
If you're going to do Android development, I'd recommend you just get IntelliJ.

But do you seriously want your user to download larger binary for the sake of saving space on developer machine ?
With Android dev kit, you only need to distribute a small binaries to run your apps.
Sure there's alternative, but i won't choose anything unrelated to Android or IOS dev environment when making apps.
Can I develop in sepples for Android using VS? What about compatibility, should I compile for different architectures?

Even cheap-ass laptops come with 1TB HDDs nowadays. And android studio is amazing - would be worth it even if it occupied 100 GB.

This is even a thing? No it's because c# is objectively better than java. Developer morale is more important than user download size.
Which is why I'm trying out kotlin to see if it's better than java enough to make me not miss c#
And before you inevitability get confused, no not the .net CLR, the ecma language standard known as c# is simply better than the language known as java
