Hello /g/.

I've finally got my first paycheck and I've set aside a little cash to purchase a new video card for my aging machine I bought when I was a fucking idiot.

I've set aside about 450 pounds to purchase a new GPU.

What would /g/ get?

Wait for the GTX 1080 or the R9 490, dont buy like a 980 or anything like that, as the prices will drop after the 1080 comes out. Wait until about late June if you're buying a video card.

That's solid advice. Unfortunately my HD5800's are about to melt down and I'm having serious problems with them at the moment.

Need to upgrade as soon as possible.

28nm came out in 2012, All Nvidia and current AMD GPUs are all 28nm.

The new GPUs (GTX 1080/1070 and R9-480x/490) are 16/14nm. Normal node reduction would be down to ~20nm however they cancelled that node and jumped straight to 16/14nm. This means the process jump from the current generation to the GPUs currently releasing this month and next month is HUGE.

The single biggest leap in GPU process tech in a decade.

What kind of price point will they release at? The titan is like 800 quid at the moment. Surely it will be worth more than that?

Not OP.

I only want to play Overwatch. What does this monumental advancement mean for me? Are these improvements targeted more towards high-end users?

The GTX 1080 MSRP is $699 USD, though it sold out day one (yesterday). I think stock should be back in a week or two, but will likely keep selling out fairly quickly unless you keep your eyes on OCUK or others for when they get stock.

The GTX 1070 is supposed to be basically the same as a GTX 980Ti in performance, for an MSRP of $449 USD and it releases june 10th.
