Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

there are really not many boundaries to how lightweight it can be, as long as you use a lightweight de like mate, xfce or lxde or a wm you will be fine. debian and buntus minimal installations are both damn small.

Nobody fucking knows why you should try it, it's a personal thing. And though this is a friendly thread that doesn't mean that half of it should be the same unanswerable question.

Are you unsatisfied with some aspect of using Windows? If yes try linux. Don't ask others to convince you or think it through for you

Well you do enjoy learning about computers, OS and programming don't you? you can learn basically everything about GNU/Linux becausE it is FOSS and has a lot of documentation, this is true for all FOS OS. you might also want to try minix3 and openbsd and plan9, but for regular usage GNU/Linux is just more comfortable.

Not the anon you replied to but imo the most lightweight distro is one which starts from the bare essentials and which you build up yourself, tailored to your needs.
>>
>>54785011
Probably LFS if you aim for that. gentoo Will be close if you compile on another machine. but even debians and ubuntus minimal installation is more minimal than arch. Their packages also work in a way that makes them more minimal.
>>
>>54784971
I was just dicking around with the audio mixer included by default. Teamspeak doesn't pick up anything from the mic and youtube/dvds/.avis aren't putting anything out. On Arch, if that's of any note.

I'd be using Xubuntu or Mint if installing teamspeak on the former wasn't a trainwreck with the .run and the latter wasn't a pile of security problems.

Are you trying to get sound via HDMI? If so try plugging speakers directly into your motherboard and see if that helps at all. Arch by default doesn't seem to like HDMI sound very much.

I solved the previous minidlna problem by resizing all images to 50% of original size, from 1.21 MiB to 140 KiB.
Now there's no hang at all because of OOM.

The next problem is playlist.
For some reason, minidlna never shows any playlist that I store on openwrt, either in m3u or m3u8 format.
Playlist is important because I need to play the music in certain order : OST, OP1, ED1, OP2, ED2.

Further to this I just looked up the official requirements:
>Xubuntu is a community‑developed, Ubuntu‑based Linux operating system. Its minimum requirements are:

>CPU: 500Mhz+
>RAM: 256MiB+ for Desktop/LiveCD - 512MiB recommended
>Hard drive space: 5GB
>Graphics card and monitor capable of 800×600 resolution

But thats the minimum so in reality it'll run like dogshit. I had xubuntu or something on an atom based netbook but it runs much more nicely with i3

There are only two polices.
Deny incoming, and allow outgoing.
Even setting allow incoming, and allow outgoing, it still does not work. I checked iptables -L and there are only two profiles, configured as above.
>>
>>54786783
That doesn't mean you have it set up correctly and it doesn't mean something else isn't blocking them. More info needed.
>>
>>54786803
I don't know what other information you want. There is nothing else installed that would be a firewall,or deny connections. Issues only arise when the firewall is enabled.
iptables -L:
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)

Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)

Chain OUTPUT (policy ACCEPT)

>>54787867
This is normal for Windows -- it puts data in weird places like that to try to prevent fragmentation. It's obviously not very effective. Ntfsresize from Linux or resizing it from another Windows may have better luck since less stuff in the partition will be in use, and therefore more should be movable.

Or, if you're adventurous or have a second drive to try things out on, you can create a new partition that's smaller and copy all files from the old partition to the new. Then use a Windows setup disc/USB to make it bootable again (shift-f10 at the first screen for cmd, bcdboot D:\windows (or whatever drive it shows up as from in the install disc -- look around with dir), bootsect /fixboot).

I have cloned WinXP by copying files and using ms-sys in Linux, and I've rebuilt 7/8/10 boot from nothing with bcdboot. File-copy cloning is best done from in Windows but not the one you're cloning. It might work to run Explorer from that command prompt and drag the files from there, or use xcopy. If you copy the files using Linux, you lose all ACLs on them as well as hidden/system/readonly attributes since NTFS-3G doesn't provide a reasonable way to access them. An attribute-less install should work fine, it's just a bit less secure and will have crap like desktop.ini visible.

Did you install it through Boot Camp emulated BIOS, or native EFI. iirc it's the native EFI that doesn't work with Ubuntu since it's nonstandard. It should work fine in Boot Camp.

If it's a dual GPU system with both Intel and discrete available, Boot Camp will disable the Intel one and force you to discrete. You *may* be able to get Ubuntu to boot as pure EFI mode and identify to the firmware as OS X. If it can do that, it can then use the Apple GPU switch to dynamically switch between GPUs and get better battery life by powering down the discrete one when not in use.

It's not known why Apple chose to disable GPU switching for Boot Camp. It's either to avoid having to write a GPU switch driver for Windows since they used custom hardware for it, or it's to make battery life worse on Windows and thus make OS X look superior on power management.

>>54788364
Herp, I forgot about robocopy being on the setup disc. That would work better than dragging it in Explorer. You still do need a separate disk to copy it to. Then you can optionally resize and reformat the original space and copy it back if you wanted it there but smaller.

In the world of bits and bytes, you count from zero, since zero doesn't mean nothing. (Nothing is logically nothing at all).

0 = byte 1
1 = byte 2
2 = byte 3
3 = byte 4

Does anyone have any experience setting up NFS shares? I set up my share, and it is getting ~100MB/s for the first 2gb of a large file over my gigabit network, and then it slows down to less than 1MB/s for a long time before going back up and repeating until the transfer is done. I am guessing that I am configuring something wrong. The Samba share between the same systems gets a constant 10MB/s.

I have been trying different configs, but this is what I have right now:

 /home/share     192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,no_root_squash,async)
/home/ext 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(async,no_subtree_check,rw,no_root_squash)
/mnt/data 192.168.0.0/255.255.255.0(rw,no_subtree_check,async,no_root_squash)

#share
192.168.0.186:/home/share /home/share nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr
192.168.0.186:/home/ext /home/ext nfs rsize=8192,wsize=8192,timeo=14,intr
192.168.0.186:/mnt/data /mnt/serverdata/ nfs rsize=32768,wsize=32768,intr,noatime

Would any of you be willing to post configurations that are working well?

GNU/Linux is great for emulation and 2d vidya. I have a raspberry pi hooked up to my hdtv running a Raspbian fork called Piplay. It's great and I also use it for configuring my network. Light and no bloat.
>>
>>54790722
I don't know if you're trolling or not, but I'll explain anyway.

In the world of bits and bytes, "0" can take up 1 bit, 2 bit, 3 bits.. It depends on the context. Assuming we mean literally the number 0, 1, 2.. etc rather than, say, a string, it still depends on the context.

In C, a float type, which can represent the number 0, is always going to take up 4 bytes - as such, it can only hold up to 6 decimal places. A 'short' type another type that can contain the value 0, can hold digits between -32,768 to 32,767 and will always be 2 bytes.

>Advanced network setup
My current setup works fine, but Id like to make it a bit more comfy.
I use a computer(Arch/headless) with two ethernet ports as a way to have my xbox on a vpn. My setup goes xbox > computer port 2 > ppp0(port one) > router/modem > internet.
The problem is services running on the actual home network like dlna, ftp, or xbox smart glass, or miracast cant actually see the xbox. I would like for everything that is connected to the computers second port to be on the same lan as the first port, but for any wan activities they would go through the ppp0 connection instead of ethernet port one.

Does anyone have any experience doing this sort of stuff? If so, can you help me out or point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Pic probably unrelated. It's netctl, and I am using ip and iptables to have the current setup work.
>>
>>54792180
You're going to have to make your system act as a router and redirect/forward traffic. Check your sysctl.conf and see if it has been disabled.
>>
>>54784177
No, get a mac.
>>
>>54792283
Where is sysctl.conf? not in /etc.
As I said before I works as is, but I want to have enp2s4's default to route all traffic to ppp0 but any traffic in the 192.168.0.1/24 range would be directed to enp2s2.
I might also need to direct any incoming traffic from emps2s to enp2s4.

I guess to put the idea of how I want it to work in C it would look like
if(ip == 192.168.0.0\24){ //or some other rigged way of saying in range of
default_route = enp2s4;
}
else default_route = ppp0;

It would be in /etc/sysctl.d.
Might also be 99/sysctl.conf.
If not you're going to need to create it with the following(there might be more i missed,but this should be it)
net.ipv4.conf.all.send_redirects = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_redirects = 1
net.ipv4.conf.all.accept_source_route = 1

If you have GPT youll need to use grub,as syslinux does not support UEFI.
You have to do more then just install syslinux/grub. You need to set it up and install it as a boot option

im using GPT, yeah - the arch wiki page has entries for BIOS and UEFI, and im not sure which to follow. in the bios i have the option to use either uefi or legacy, but when im in the .iso live image of archbang, it seems to have booted using BIOS and not UEFI

install the packages grub and os-prober

you'll have to chroot on it before and install it on the drive you want.

Does anyone else get really annoyed when they see someone post stupid things?

It's not their stupidity which annoys me, but the fact that someone else might see it and then perpetually keep the stupidity alive by parroting it again and again. The latest example was the recent changed default in systemd's logind. User processes are being killed now after logging out of the user's session by default. That could have been done before by changing a simple config file to true. Changing it back is as simple as that. Idiots who haven't really informed themselves are now bringing out the usual "fuck systemd, fuck lennart potter" arguments, revealing their stupidity.

What motivates those people? Do you feel smart when they complain about such a "niche", technological topic and therefore demonstrate their knowledge about it?
