Only if you're very good. If all you can do is run metasploit on the network you'll be making less than minimum wage.

well its usually web application, the days off poppin boxes through some common daemons are gone. the most common way is using social engineering, then pivoting your way through the network. though with all of the new embedded devices and custom network architectures, buffer overflows will be seen a lot.
