You can rely on the correct laptop for a long time.
Buy a model you will be able to upgrade, and replace any part of without special tools or training. The only thing that is usually impossible to replace is the CPU which is soldiered to the motherboard so be sure to get an adequate one.
The Lenova Thinkpad 420 can be easily found on newegg for less than 300 dollars. Invest 200 more into upgrading the ram and storage and you have an excellent laptop that excels at most anything but gaming.
