I don't mean this against ublock specifically, but if people use Linux (or even Winshit) why bother with a fucking adblocker in the browser instead of just using a hosts file that filters the shit out?

ublock is more than a adblocker, it blocks unwanted elements as well

it also remove anti-adblock blockers.
>>
Can be easily turned off if it breaks a website, and you can also block other unwanted elements. It's not like you can actually notice any performance difference anyway.

They ease the job of the ad blocker extension I think. Overall less resource usage coming from your browser. Using both seems like the way to go imo.

Hardware is fast enough to do it in-browser.

Host files are so huge they can freeze machines for up to an hour.

Host file isn't easy to use or convenient, being able to tweak it and does not offer custom element hiding.

Why do people like you think they are allowed to open threads?
Blocking with a host file is extremely inefficient. The host file works best if kept short. Resorting to a host file has to be an extrema ratio (e.g. malicious sites). It can't be reasonably used to block ads.
A gargantuan host file could also slow down the DNS lookup.

The only alternative to an addon would be a proxy-based ad-blocking (e.g. https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/privoxy#Ad_Blocking_with_Privoxy )
It could be efficient for handling multiple clients and multiple browsers in a LAN, still it won't and can't handle cosmetic filters gracefully as uBlock Origin does.

Yes, sure is summer in here.

>By May 2013, one popular hosts file manager was generating hosts files with over two million entries. This slows the performance of name resolution in popular desktop operating systems whose resolver rescans the hosts file linearly for every DNS resolution. This shouldn't be too hard to fix at the operating system level: scan it once and build a Bloom filter, a data structure that acts as a lossy compression of a set. The so-called "safe browsing" filter in Google Chrome uses the same data structure

Anyone with a rooted Android device or jailbroken iPhone and an edited host file can surely tell you there is absolutely no noticebale difference in performance. And we're talking much smaller processors and wifi connections. I myself have 8 host file lists enabled on my device. OpenNIC DNS everywhere, btw.

As of late the ublock anti-adblock blocker isn't working. Is there a setting for it? I never really tinkered around with it but some website anti-adblockers sometimes do show up
>>
>>54773028
Because rule based blocking is superior to domain based blocking.

With uBlock you can block down to scripts containing certain functions as well as elements.

host based blocking is rudimentary in comparison.
>>
>>54773443
>he doesnt launch his browser in private mode by default

Because lots of websites refuse access to people who block ads, and it's much simpler and quicker to disable ublock for that website than it is to rmeove your adblocking host so you can view the site, and then replace it once you're done.

>it's much simpler and quicker to disable ublock for that website than it is to rmeove your adblocking host so you can view the site
Why are you giving in?
If you're going to block ads then why disable the blocking because a site asks you to? That only encourages more sites to implement these scripts.

Not to mention that some of the scripts (like antiadblock.com) are literally malware and the obfuscated code can be easily modified to connect to dangerous domains without the user being aware.

Don't disable your adblockers. It just isn't worth it. Often you can still view content on a page by just blocking the first party scripts.

Hosts file is not meant for adblock, i.e. you're doing it wrong.

Literally all they have to do is use IPs instead of hostnames and your host file is completely useless.

REAL ad block can also do content analysis, pattern filters, etc.

Bonus: if you set up your own Privoxy server, not only can you use it as a web proxy, but you also get your ad block profile shared across all devices automatically
