SpaceX will launch the Thaicom-8 satellite on top of a falcon 9 rocket. It's the 5th launch of the year and they will attempt to land the first stage on their drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You"

This is the 2nd attempt, probable launch time: 21h40 UTC (4 hours from now)

SpaceX will launch the Thaicom-8 satellite on top of a falcon 9 rocket.

Probable launch time: 21h40 UTC (convert to your time zone fag)

It's the 5th launch of the year and they will attempt to land the first stage on their drone ship "Of Course I Still Love You"
This will be a three engine burn because of tight fuel margin.

The satellite is launched on a super-synchronous geostationary transfer orbit.
A geostationary orbit is a circular orbit 35,786 kilometers (22,236 mi) above the Earth's equator and following the direction of the Earth's rotation.
A geostationary transfer orbit is an elliptical orbit where the highest point of the orbit is at ~35,786 kilometers (22,236 mi).

The first and second stage will put the satellite on a 200x200 km parking orbit. Once the orbit is confirmed to be correct, the second stage will reignite to boost the apogee to the correct altitude. The second stage will then release the satellite.
Once the satellite is on the transfer orbit, it'll boost itself to its final circular orbit.

The launch was canceled yesterday due to a "tiny glitch in the motion of an upper stage engine actuator".

ULA also is heavily dependant on large government contracts that pay more than just flight costs, have merely a concept for any sort of recovery with no real steps towards making it happen, is horrendously expensive for small sat launches, and is currently dependant on Russian engines since they didn't design and build their own in house.

ULA was king for a long time, but they can't compete for these kinda of launches.

“The mass of the recovery hardware is not a dramatic impact on payload performance,” Shotwell said in a February interview. “Conservatively, if I put 1,000 lbs on the first stage, I'm only losing 100 pounds of payload or so to orbit. What impacts is the fuel we need to reserve to execute the reentry and the landing burns.”

Second stage would would be a different story though.

They really are pretty good. The series changed Musk's views on AI so he has some hope of it turning out right as the books are based on the Culture basically being run by a bunch of computers called Minds that are embedded in ships and orbitals (think small ringworlds).

Sure its just fiction but so is the doom and gloom AI will destroy humanity sentiment.

Any news on the payload?

Successfully deployed and on its way.

sure, for the hardware, but you also need to consider the fuel required for landing

for instance, their quoted payload capacity is about half when going reusable instead of expendable
>>
Anybody remembers the amount of times the first stage is projected to be reusable?
>>
>>54774694
they plan to reuse them about 10 times, although actual numbers will have to wait until there's some statistics on reusability

Any rough projection on the saved costs per launch compared to an otherwise identical non-recovered launch?

Since when is /g/ that retarded?

Iain M Banks has a lot to answer for...

I don't recall any official quote on this, but basically you save maybe 80-85% on the cost of the 1st stage (since there's still some cost for inspections and recovery, and possibly minor repairs).

Musk said that the hardware accounts for 95% of a launch and fuel is only 5%, and let's say that the first stage is 60% of the hardware, so you save 80% of 60% of 95%, or in total about 45%.

I guess reusability could cut prices down to about half then, which is still 30 million bucks per launch.

I may be wrong but musk said it was about 10 orders of magnitude cheaper or something.

Naw, everything will be fine.

Well..
That is good to know...

>Implying 1/10000000000 the total cost
If the cost was originally $10 billion, then 10 orders magnitude cheaper would be $1
>>
>>54774094
if all that's being simulated in this universe is our planet and the whole space exploration thing is just a way to mislead us then adding things that make us doubt it wouldn't make much sense
>>

I think you mean 1 order of magnitude, which is 10 times cheaper.
