What issues do you experience?
The first few times I tried FreeBSD the automated installer would try to connect wireless and it would always fail at DHCP lease acquisition.
After reading the handbook I found out that I can actually connect without much trouble, I just have to issue one command, which I put in my rc.conf and now I'm well past that problem.
I'm still too lazy to put wpa_supplicant at startup because I haven't yet had the need to connect to other APs

on gnulinux i just turn on my laptop and everything just works. wifi works. le dick works. shiet bsd is like a decade behind gnulinux in usability. im also not a cuck so i will not be using a os that promotes cuckoldry in its license like the bsd license

seriously, all these meme spewing kids and the stupid dumbass who falls for it (or is he just samefagging?).
OP you motivated me to make the switch to BSD and I appreciate it but look at these thread. I hereby invite you to make this thread in a better community where there is actual discussion and people actually like to learn.
Don't want to lure unwanted visitors (though we have good moderation), but here's a hint

I demoed OpenBSD on my T61 for a week. It was really slow running gnome. I then tried Arch with gnome on the same T61 and it performed much better. What did I just experience?

GNOME on BSD is a hack, mostly.
Still, I think OpenBSD on laptops is underclocked by default. There was a sysctl parameter to making it run faster, but I don't remember what it is since I never had to set it.

By far, BSD shills are some of the most persistent and aggressive shills on /g/. This entire board is basically shill express anyway. Don't know how long till the shills leave BSD on jump on the next obscure, cool OS.

Nice projecting, this is literally the first time I ever posted in a BSD thread. I don't really care about disproving you either, because I don't want nor do I intend on using BSD. If you have fun with your special niche OS and makes you feel cool, then by all means use it.

I just switched my dedicated server running Linux to FreeBSD. Huge difference in setup and ease of configuration. Incredibly refreshing having a whole new experience and reading up on the manuals to see how everything works. FreeBSD on a server environment is definitely light-years of using something as outdated and fucked as Ubuntu for servers or being retarded and using Arch for a Linux server.

Alright, just making sure.

I kind of like how they don't push out new releases too often, because I don't have to upgrade every 6 month. But I think they don't really make any new advancements as a result, it's a shame because NetBSD is genuinely interesting.

**trigger warning**
**mature bsd question**
Advantages of running freebsd or openbsd as a vps on digital ocean? I'm currently running ubuntu lamp stack but that's just because i didn't know jack shit about servers or linux when I set it up. Main objective is to host small low traffic websites, sites that use php for some basic templating etc, maybe some mysql, but nothing fancy like an app. I'm thinking about running nginx and i want the most bang for my buck. I want to host as many sites as possible using virtual hosts and still have good performance. I also want strong security. Would bsd offer me any advantages over linux? I definitely want to get off of ubuntu and apache because it seems to be bloated and wasteful with the system resources.
>>

>>54758508
Wouldn't know, I stick with -stable

Is it true that HAMMER2 is coming to OpenBSD or just rumors?
>>
>>54758520
I think the rule of thumb is using FreeBSD if you serve a lot of content. OpenBSD would work too, but if you're using it in a huge networking environment it's mostly gonna be installed on switches and such.

>Would bsd offer me any advantages over linux
That's mostly a matter of preference, but I appreciate *BSDs for their documentation and simplicity. They have a great firewall that's not a complete fucking mess, too.

>>54758539
HAMMER2 isn't even done, yet. I think there was some talk of a Dragonfly dev studying OpenBSD to eventually port HAMMER to it. It would be a good way to compete with ZFS.

I know I'm gonna sound annoying and like a pajeet on tech support, but did you read this?
Are all the files in /etc/firmware?
>>
>>54759412
It probably has more drivers, I think its the most popular BSD.
>>
>>54759417
Already read it back to front twice. Also, see pic for /etc/firmware contents.
>>
>>54759575
Well shit. I don't know what to tell you.
The only idea I have now is rebooting, entering boot -c at the boot prompt and enabling iwn from there. To actually enable it you can type "enable iwn".
>>
>>54759594
Alright, m8, thanks for the advice. I'll try that and then get back to the thread.

T-thanks Apple…

In other news, ifconfig still reports no iwn. Let's try resetting the BIOS and trying again!

Well hopefully the picture is right side up, but here's the output after unplugging the Ethernet cable, resetting BIOS, and rebooting again. Unfortunately, iwn0 is STILL not showing up in ifconfig. Seems I'm basically SOL, and should go back to Linux. Maybe another time, BSD. Another time.

>>54759719
Hah, still upside down. Fuck you, iOS, and your for some godforsaken reason shitty way of storing photos.
>>
>>54759719
I'm really pissed off now, I REALLY want to know why it's not working.

Hope I don't run into a similar issue if I get a ThinkPad.

Senpai you installed the Australian patch

Same here, mate. I hope nobody else has this issue. I only paid $100 for this computer and I love it to bits but I've been lusting after BSD for months and now that I finally have time to try it out it does fuck all. Very disappointing.

>>54755262
Try FreeBSD and next DragonflyBSD whey currently have almost lasted intel drm (from 4.3 but unstable) driver or just FreeBSD with experimental intel drm driver from 4.6 https://github.com/FreeBSDDesktop/freebsd-base-graphics/tree/drm-next-4.6 .

>I demoed OpenBSD on my T61 for a week. It was really slow running gnome. I then tried Arch with gnome on the same T61 and it performed much better. What did I just experience?

Anecdotal bullshit immature retard logic.

>Don't know how long till the shills leave BSD on jump on the next obscure, cool OS.

BSD has been around long before any existing OS dumbfuck. Doesn't register as a fad.
>>
>>54755619
>OpenBSD's intended for desktop use.
nope. these are the intentions.

http://www.openbsd.org/goals.html
>>
>>54760701
I meant the devs use it as a desktop OS and therefor develop it to be one, which you can't deny.
>>
>>54755690
>The Gentoo community is better and more professional than BSD

Yeah thats why Gentoo's nonprofit status lapse for years because of ineptitude. OpenBSD has had uninterrupted 6-month releases for over a decade. Openbsd foundation sits on cash and is actually professional as a Canadian nonprofit.

yeah because anything super secret has to look like a cyberpunk film. faggot.

I can't wait until OpenBSD gets RPi support. Apparently one of the devs got their hands on it and is studying it.

I don't care what you think senpai.

>What did I just experience?

Gnome and all it's epic shittiness. Try Xfce, or KDE. Both work great. Better yet, try Fluxbox, use it to build a custom DE that suits you perfectly, and maybe stop bloating your system unnecessarily

Better for what? As a desktop, no. As a router/firewall, no. As a simple boot and forget server, no. For development, no.

As a complex server/server farm, yes. For bleeding edge/enterprise features, yes. For vastly superior Linux binary compatibility, yes.
>>
What makes OpenBSD more secure than FreeBSD?
>>
>>54761638
>For vastly superior Linux binary compatibility
Of course FreeBSD has a better Linux compat layer, OpenBSD doesn't have one at all.

Oh sorry son, didn't mean to bash your precious like that. It is shit though, unless you just happen to be retarded and love trying to use a GUI clearly designed for tablets on a PC/laptop. Or if you just love systemd, which I'm sure you most certainly do, because we've already established that you are retarded. Go ahead. Show us how you can count to potato.

Openbsd seems to have created a ton of cool things that everyone else uses like openssh etc. Why don't more people use openbsd?

Because people are conformists who want binaries without sources.

It's side project and not OpenBSD itself.

Because of internal politic.
Literally dictatorship.
