Best old laptop (<$150) for linux and schoolwork, I prefer Linux mint 17.3 cinnamon, but feel free to recommend me some distros. The laptop atleast must be able to work and not slower than death.

ThinkPad X200, definitely. A lot of room for upgrades down the line as well. Mine's got 8GB of RAM and an SSD. Installed libreboot and I'm running Trisquel GNU/Linux.

Sounds like a good idea. I'm pretty new with linux, what are some easy to use ones (other than ubuntu) that are good and stable. Mint is pretty simple, although I don't know much commands.
