In response to your question OP, take it from one of the lead architects of ZFS:
There's nothing special about ZFS that requires/encourages the use of ECC RAM more so than any other filesystem. If you use UFS, EXT, NTFS, btrfs, etc without ECC RAM, you are just as much at risk as if you used ZFS without ECC RAM. Actually, ZFS can mitigate this risk to some degree if you enable the unsupported ZFS_DEBUG_MODIFY flag (zfs_flags=0x10). This will checksum the data while at rest in memory, and verify it before writing to disk, thus reducing the window of vulnerability from a memory error.
I would simply say: if you love your data, use ECC RAM. Additionally, use a filesystem that checksums your data, such as ZFS.

desu senpai, I'm builing my NAS right now.
At the moment all my data is scattered across half a dozen drives in various locations around the country (parents house, girlfriend's house, work, etc.)
I'm after redundancy, and I need it ASAP, because all of those drives are old.
I'll build a half decent freenas box, and then upgrade the mobo and ram at a later date. No biggy.
It's not really the ECC ram that cost a lot, its the limitations on chipsets and mobos that will force you to spend more money when you don't necessarily need to right now.
I have an i5-2500 (not K) lying around doing nothing.
Shall I use it to build a NAS/server? Or is the power consumption going to be fucking crazy?

I had non ecc in my freenas and i noticed some of the files were corrupt.
