Welcome to /fglt/. We are always open to users of all levels, including absolute beginners.

There are four ways to try GNU/Linux, you can:

0) Install a GNU/Linux OS on a VM (Virtual Machine/VirtualBox) for "safety purposes"
1) Use the Live ISO directly without installing anything, that way, you can get a "full GNU/Linux experience".
2) Dual-boot GNU/Linux with Windows/Mac (recommended if you want to learn more about GNU/Linux)
3) Go balls deep and overwrite everything with GNU/Linux

Before asking, please search for answers to your questions in resources.

Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.

Understand that much of your software from Windows will be unavailable, although maybe WINE can make up for it.

>>
>>54707139
Thing is, I was planning on using Ubuntu because I am a noob and I want it to hold my hand. I don't want to use original Ubuntu because Lol Amazon and Unity.

Should I just switch to Arch or Debian then, where I would learn more about Linux anyways?
>>
>>54707202

You learn about Linux by subscribing to the Linux developers mailing list or by looking at its source.
>>
>>54707202
you can use (K-, X-, L-)ubuntu as your daily driver, but the only practical difference is that you'll get a tool to install proprietary drivers with, and nonfree packages without additional setup.
If you don't mind setting that up (and Debian for example has very good instructions in their wiki) then you should use Debian before *buntu. Arch only if you have patience or reading skills.
>>
>>54707202
it's not difficult to switch distros so you could start with either.

pulseaudio thinks that the "analog stereo output" profile is always unplugged and therefore uses the hdmi audio as default but if I set it manually (with
pacmd set-card-profile 0 output:analog-stereo

Which GNU/Linux distribution should I use if I want to study web development? Currently I'm on Windows and I just want to know if there are some better tools available on Linux to practice java script, php, ruby etc etc? Like, is it even worth switching if we are talking about web development tools exclusively.
I had some experience with Linux distributions before. I know the very basics i.e. I can do a minimal install of Debian with adding X, preferable DE etc.

it doesn't really matter but i personally like debian.
tools for programming are usually cross platform or have decent alternatives. which programs did you use on windows?
if it is worth switching is something you have to decide by yourself. i think it is.
>>
>>54707930
Every GNU/Linux distro has the same functionalities. The only differences are the packaging systems and the values of freedom.

When choosing a distro, just ask yourself if you want something pre-riced or something you want to setup yourself and if freedom is important for you.

>Like, is it even worth switching if we are talking about web development tools exclusively.

Programming is generally better on UNIX than on Windows, simply because you have more control about your system, which makes access very simple.

Programming and other benefits aside; seriously get rid of Windows. An operating system that does what MS wants and ignores your own wishes is unacceptable. Just imagine you're writing a program and your keystrokes are send to MS? Or you leave your computer for taking a shit and come back and all your work is lost because gwx.exe is updating to 10. Step up bro.

>alternatives
We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

>“Ad-blocker”

When the purpose of some program is to block advertisements, “ad-blocker” is a good term for it. However, the GNU browser IceCat blocks advertisements that track the user as consequence of broader measures to prevent surveillance by web sites. This is not an “ad-blocker,” this is surveillance protection.

this is gold, next time some retard argues about how unethical blocking ads is I'm just gonna post this.

Is it just me being retarded or is there some way to get window snapping working proper in XFCE?
It works (almost) fine as long as I have not set Super to open (Whisker) menu but as soon as I set Super to open menu there is no response from Super+RightArrow. With Super+<something> to open menu it works fine though.
My guess is that pressing Super activates menu-opening and supress snapping but fuck if I know...

If you browse steam, you'll see whatever the game, a thread asking for a linux port.

That linux users ask for a linux port is normal. They don't use windows and wants to play the game.

But then there will be some guys, coming into the tread and telling
>hurr durr why port to linux it doesn't have market share

Why ? What's the point for this guy that some people won't be able to play this game on linux ? I mean, if he use windows, he can already play it. It's not like devs will drop windows support for linux. Why is there always people arguing that devs shouldn't care of linux development ?
>>
>>54709023
Go to /v/ and check out a thread about consoles. actually cheack out any thread vaguely on the topic of platforms for gaming. you'll see the exact same thing all over the place; its common for people to want to protect what they have for their system alone, because the more other people want to play their game but cant, the bigger their ego inflates
>>
>>54709023
>Why is there always people arguing that devs shouldn't care of linux development ?
Resources ain't free anon. You must use a resource (ie. a dev) for Linux during days, and not code monkeys, fucking competent ones. It costs money, and there is no market share.

If the game uses a current standard engine a port is pretty much just a checkbox. And the studios that use teir own engine usually have enough money to hire somebody. There are only a few exceptions. NMS is one.

Sid or Stretch?
I've heard an argument that in terms of security and software freshness, testing branch is the worst. It does happen that updates break things but they don't do this without warning usually if you have apt-listbugs installed. Testing is fine for regular usage but if something happens it will be fixed faster in sid.

Distro shouldn't matter, but you might want to use the same or something similar to what you plan to use for the server.
Whether it is worth switching, I hope so, but I can't know that.
A big part of web development is managing the system, deployment, security, updates etc.
You may not have to deal with that personally, but you should know about it so you don't make everyone work harder to fix your mistakes.
My setup is very basic.
I use lxc for containers where I can run a minimal working example of the server.
I have a couple of pi's where I test the setup so I can monitor the traffic before sending it to the server.

Thunar is supposed to be more lightweight than pcman I thought.

Did you just mean thumbnails? Maybe pcman shares something in common with nautilus which made it appear to work faster since you already had been using nautilus (maybe they use similar libraries or cache thumbnails in the same place)
I really don't know. Just throwing out ideas.

I would try to give it a little bit more of a test run though. You can't always tell with first time loads.

It is kind of finicky on the thumbnails though, at least for me.
Most of the time it's fine but every once in a while there's some oddity like if you delete a file and make a new file with the same name it'll still show the thumbnail of the old one.

But it has the largest size thumbnail display of any Linux file manager that I'm aware of so I still like it.

boot into ubuntu and
$ sudo dd if=/dev/sdX of=/dev/sdY bs=512 count=10000

this will send the working MBR bits from the bootable drive to the broken one.

seems like it. but really, the fix isn't hard. i am not sure if writing a windows live medium rewuires some special program but it should work with cp.
stick in an empty usb mass storage device, don't mount it, type lsblk to find out where it is, the output should look something like
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
sda 8:0 0 223.6G 0 disk
└─sda1 8:1 0 223.6G 0 part /

├─sdd1 8:49 1 1.2G 0 part /media/simon/Xubuntu 16.04 LTS amd64

where sdd is in my cas the usb mass storage device. now i would type cp wangblows.iso /dev/sdd && sync
