so why is Nvidia still coming out with new GPUs?
didnt the red pill come out last year that DX12 was going to make lower end cards run better and essentially stop the need of upgrading?
or did they quickly jew up some other gimmick to justify constant rolling 3 figure priced hardware updates

Because nvidia does not just make gaming GPUs.
Defective shit tier dies gotta go somewhere.
Why wouldn't they? Unless you're texas instruments, deciding to stop releasing new product isn't a great idea.

so the most expensive nvidia gaymen GPUs arent also the fastest for video encoding or what ever else you'd need a discreet GPU for?

This. Most of nvidia's profit margins don't come from the gaming gpu market, but from the professional market. Amd has nothing which can compete with tesla at the moment, so that entire market is owned by nvidia. That's huge profit going for the way of nvidia on a yearly basis.

discrete

This. Someone can finally see AMD and Nvidia competition above gayming sphere.

There will always be a need for upgrading.
If technology reaches the point where the average GPU can run every new game at max settings... just quadruple the number of pixels on the monitor (4K, 8K, etc.)
If that still isn't enough, just increase the refresh rate (120 Hz, 144 Hz, etc.)
If that still isn't enough, increase the number of monitors / multitasking. (I should be able to play Crysis at 8K 144 FPS on 4 monitors at the same time with 5000 Firefox tabs open and no performance hit!)
Our demand for constantly pushing the limits of hardware is insatiable.

Esthetics do not justify purpose
Soon we'll just be running VR benchmarks without any purpose than just marvel in awe
Wheres the gg

Relatively high segment of their marketc thats saying enterprise divisions are more important but in fact residential and light commercial has higher penetration and marketable margin
Now if industrial pushes demand for another type of design, the gaming market will gravitate to that
The only reason VR is developed extensively is also due to the focus on driverless cars or, simulation of real world situations and decisions within them (this "deep learning" data is collected with your consent)
