Yeah, the drivers are shit (no vsync, no 10 bit, etc) but the performance is unbeatable compared to nvidia. (Look at the GT/s)

I want to try out the free drivers again, they might be good enough to use for mpv these days - and there also seems to be a 10-bit enabling patch for them.

It just needs to match nvidia hardware, which given the fact that AMD hardware intrinsically runs mpv's shaders much better, might be easy to do even with the free driver overhead.

But who knows. I just sort of want to avoid giving more money to nvidia if I can at all avoid it. Company of liars, cheats and scammers.

>>
>>54614298
>I've never tried plex, do you mind telling me what it is about?
It's analogous to having a self-hosted Netflix. You point Plex to your Video library and it can automatically look up metadata online and stream to all your devices. It can also encode on the fly into different bitrates in case you do not have enough bandwidth to stream the full quality version.

The only "gotcha" to take into account is that the thumbnail generation process will eat a lot of CPU if you point it to a massive library of videos which it has not scanned already. It should be fine once it gets caught up though... These thumbnails are used for seeking, so you can see a little preview image before you seek.

It is by far the best interface for organizing and browsing a video library.
>>
>>54614428
Thumbnail generation can be disabled btw
>>
>>54614428
>It can also encode on the fly into different bitrates in case you do not have enough bandwidth to stream the full quality version.
The main reason is to re-encode on the fly into formats that the target device understands. Let's say your movie is a mkv file but your TV can't play them.
This only works with decent hardware though. You can run Plex on small NAS hardware but they usually don't offer this simply because the hardware is not fast enough.
>>
>>54611908
How come?

No "yes/no" easy option for it? :(

This is my setup:
GPU > HDMI > TV > JACK > 2.1 SPEAKERS

>>
>>54618013
many 5.1/7.1 sources have the voices mainly on the center channel, if you play back only the left and right channels without downmixing, the voices will sound muted, as you're not playing the center channel at all
the solution is to downmix (that is, mix the side, rear, center, and lfe channels into the left/right channels)
>>

Thank you for those explanations.
But it doesn't solve my problem. :(
How to mimic this "very useful" kodi feature?
>>
>>54618397
i'm pretty sure it does
perhaps the problem is that mpv is being told you're using a >2 channels system when you're not
for example, your tv is recognized as 5.1 channel, but you're only using the stereo output of it

if this is the case, i'd recommend setting your OS to stereo, otherwise, you could configure mpv to assume 2 channel (audio-channels=2)
>>
>>54618594
This is my mpv.conf:
vo=opengl-hq:backend=dxinterop
hwdec=auto
audio-channels=2

Downmixing works but not like kodi with boost center channel option enabled.

Bash for windows thing doesn't come with an X server. Even if you use an external X server like Xming that runs in Windows side, you are limited to OpenGL 1.1 which is not enough for mpv opengl output, nor mpv can call native windows libs like directx inside that subsystem. I'm trying to get vaapi hw decoding to work on mpv. I'm running Fedora 23 on an intel 560M using intel graphics. That's nehalem based with HD graphics on the cpu.

Whenever i put hwdec=auto mpv runs with vaapi but my videos end up with green blocks in them. The blocks are about 10x10 pixels in dimension. They come in groups. The groups start from the edge of the video and work their way towards the other side. A scene change usually clears them and they start again.

Is there a way to fix this?

You mean the Windows 10 thing? It can probably compile a Windows mpv build with MinGW cross-compilers just as well as a real Linux can, though it will take more time because, unlike MSYS2, it won't have binary versions of all the dependencies mpv needs in its repos.

On the plus side, it's probably easier to get a static binary out of it because you can use lachs0r's build scripts. If you have Bash for Windows installed, you should try them: https://github.com/lachs0r/mingw-w64-cmake

As for running the Linux version of mpv in the Bash environment, >>54619448 is right.

mpv is a video player for a specific niche of people who like and use command-line software. It was born out of MPlayer, an older a command-line video player. It's lightweight and has high quality video output, rivaling madVR, but you probably won't be interested in it if you have never used command-line software before or you have a strong preference for GUI software.

>why would you want to use this on windows instead of codec packs?
Pluggable codecs on Windows are a thing of the past. Even the best MPC-HC setup only has one pluggable codec, LAV, which handles all video formats including lossless DTS-MA. Both mpv and LAV use the same underlying codecs anyway (libavcodec.)

>does it have a gui or do you need to be a command-line autist to use mpv?
It has no GUI apart from a small onscreen controller with some playback controls and a seek-bar. You can use it without touching the command-line by associating it with video files and double-clicking on them, but if you don't know how to use the command-line, you probably won't have a good time because a lot of features will be out of reach (like playing YouTube videos.)

Since mpv can be used as a backend for other video players, there are external projects that incorporate mpv and provide a GUI. See: http://bakamplayer.u8sand.net/
>>
>>54633912
>>54633985
Make sure mpv is in your %PATH% or your command prompt is cd'd to mpv's directory. Make sure you're using the 'mpv' or 'mpv.com' command, not 'mpv.exe' (which will always run the GUI version with no command-line output.)

If all else fails, write a log file by adding
log-file=C:\Temp\whatever.txt
to your config and upload to pastebin.

>>54631316
Post the message (if you're still here.)

Note: mpv is no longer supported on XP, so make sure you're on Vista or later.

Linux and OS X is definitely not the cause, seeing as their increase in market share is too small to be relevant atm (Especially Linux's). Mobile market? Probably.

Either way, seeing as MPC is not a commercial product, I doubt that it's market share. More likely that the dev got a live or something.

See: >>54634026

Basically, unless you typically use command-line software, you probably don't want to. Since you mentioned two GUI video players and nothing like MPlayer, i'm guessing you don't. Otherwise, if the idea of a command-line video player appeals to you, go ahead.

mpv has a few nice features like youtube-dl integration, automatic ICC profile loading, convolution-based frame interpolation, etc., but they're probably nothing to learn a new user-interface paradigm over.
>>
>>54634026
>including lossless DTS-MA
Does this format really deserve special mention?...
>>
>>54634781
Well, support for it in FFmpeg is kind of new. It used to be the only format LAV required an external codec for (dtsdecoderdll.dll,) but now they're all internal.

I think I've run into a bug.
But can't tell if it's related to mpv or my shitty DE.
Basically sometimes my mouse pointer disappears, but I can still interact with objects normally, as if the mouse pointer icons failed to load.
I think it's related to mpv because it happened twice now after I updated youtube-dl, and I use it to open videos over http with it and happened when I switch to full screen.
I can get the pointer back by rebooting but it's such nonsense.
Any one have any idea ?

chroma: jinc
upscaling: lanczos3ar
downscaling: bicubic
upscale refinements: superres1

I finally found a way to avoid this message box.
I just have to use the angle backend.

I don't know why it doesn't work with default backend or dxinterop. :(

Interpolation is very great without any ghosting and that's insanely good. ;)

I use the latest build from here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/mpv-player-windows/files/64bit/

vo=opengl-hq:deband=no:tscale-clamp:tscale=oversample:interpolation:backend=angle

>>54639945
Probably cause i'm running a shitmactop from 2011. OSX was so laggy on this piece of shit that I swapped it for arch and it works like a charm.

For interp i'm using vapoursynth with this config:

# vim: set ft=python:

import vapoursynth as vs
core = vs.get_core()
clip = video_in

dst_fps = display_fps

# Interpolating to fps higher than 60 is too CPU-expensive, smoothmotion can handle the rest.
while (dst_fps > 60):
dst_fps /= 2

# Skip interpolation for 60 Hz content
if not (container_fps > 59):
src_fps_num = int(container_fps * 1e8)
src_fps_den = int(1e8)
dst_fps_num = int(dst_fps * 1e4)
dst_fps_den = int(1e4)
# Needed because clip FPS is missing
clip = core.std.AssumeFPS(clip, fpsnum = src_fps_num, fpsden = src_fps_den)
print("Reflowing from ",src_fps_num/src_fps_den," fps to ",dst_fps_num/dst_fps_den," fps.")

sup = core.mv.Super(clip, pel=1, hpad=8, vpad=8)
bvec = core.mv.Analyse(sup, blksize=8, isb=True , chroma=True, search=3, searchparam=1)
fvec = core.mv.Analyse(sup, blksize=8, isb=False, chroma=True, search=3, searchparam=1)
clip = core.mv.BlockFPS(clip, sup, bvec, fvec, num=dst_fps_num, den=dst_fps_den, mode=3, thscd2=12)

clip.set_output()

There's always some loss during playback. The question is which loss you consider the best.

If you don't have any specific preference just start with
vo=opengl-hq:scale=ewa_lanczos:cscale=ewa_lanczos
. Anything else is subjective and should be based on your preference.
