I need some help /g/
So my mother's computer seems to be downloading something at all times and I can't figure out what it is. In the last 24 hours her estimated data usage went up 30GB and its fucking up the internet connection, I'm trying to play games and its adding about 250ms to the ping. Any idea what this is or how I can find out whats happening? Its pissing me off immensely, I've check the running programs and couldn't find anything, could it be some kind of virus or malware using her computer as some form of server for seeding something? Thanks

I am in need of a rig upgrade but I have a problem.

I live out in the middle of the country where the internet is limited to a small number of gigs and shared with the whole family. For the past four/five years I have used a gaming laptop and have downloaded all of my updates and games at the library.

Ideally I would want to upgrade to a desktop but obviously that would be a problem with my current situation. However, I have a solution, and it might seem slightly autistic but bear with me.

My solution is to install my os onto a normal hard drive (not interested in the ssd meme) and throw the hard drive into an external case and take it to the library when I want to upgrade shit.

A few questions about this:

1. Is this solution stupid?
2. Would a laptop have any problems with booting another os from an external hard drive and downloading shit to it? Would it be slow, etc?
3. Would static electricity be a problem when moving the drive from case to external?

If it doesnt work then I guess I will invest in another gaming laptop, although that is not ideal.

(please be kind. I am a poorfag farmer)

I want to preface this by apologizing for being retarded and admitting I know next to nothing about networking. My router lists its WAN IP address as 192.168.x.x just like a LAN IP address, while my external IP is a normal address, different than the one my router lists as its WAN IP address. I changed the MAC address of my router and the WAN IP address changed but my external IP address did not. The fuck is going on and how can I change my external IP?
>>
>>54607975
external IP is set by your provider, specifically the modem. depending on the ISP, you can get a new one by hard resetting the modem. you'd have to pay to get an IP you can select.

have an ssd for your OS and main programs and some game son your desktop.

have a HDD that you can easily remove and put in your old laptop to download things to at the library.

the only problem is whether you can get an hdd that will fit in your laptop.

yo ucna have an OS on your hdd that you dont boot from on your desktop. just select the SSD as first boot priority in the bios.

you can have a free os like linux or pirated windows on that hdd.

Hey /g/, I'm having a lot of trouble trying to overclock my 965BE. Let me preface all of this by saying that I'm very inexperienced when it comes to overclocking. At any rate, I tried to overclock to 4GHz with an NB speed of 2400MHz, and I could not get it stable for the fucking life of me (even though, as I understand it, those speeds are quite achievable on the 965). I had got my vcore up to around ~1.48, and my CPU-NB voltage at ~1.25. Even so, I still couldn't seem to get through 5 minutes of prime95 without an error or crash (I was running blend).

Most of my problems seemed to be with the higher FFTs. Given that my NB settings seem pretty moderate, I'm guessing it was a memory issue. Long ago, when I was a dumb babby, I bought mismatched RAM. Both modules are the same in every regard, although one is 1.7v vs 1.5v (although, my motherboard seems to automatically downvolt the 1.7v to 1.5v), and the command rate (2T vs. 2N). Could that be what's causing my instability? Or is there something else I'm missing here?

I have two location blocks in my nginx config. First one is a basic location that will first try to serve a static file and if it doesn't find one it will forward the request to a proxy. Finally it should serve a 503 if the proxy isn't available.
I have the following config:
location / {
try_files $uri @proxy =503;
}
location @proxy {
[proxy settings]
}

However nginx will always either serve a static file or a 503, but will never serve a page from the proxy. However if I delete the 503 from try_files nginx starts serving from the proxy.
Do I misunderstand how try_files works with codes?

Sounds like screen tearing which would be an issue with your refresh rate. Can you give any more info? The refresh rate of the monitor, the graphics card, etc?

So the refresh rate matches, it could be just early signs of hardware failure?

Hey /g/ I just looked up skylake's support for windows 7/8.1 and I found this: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/skylake-support

What antivirus would you all recommend? I've been using Windows Security Essentials for a few months now and am pretty satisfied with it. It's nowhere near as intrusive as some of the other AV's I tried. I probably don't need a better one since I haven't had a virus infection this decade but it's better to be sure.

And how long do external hard drives last? I've bought a western digital 2 TB one 4 years ago and haven't had any problems but I'd rather not lose the data I have on it since I heard they can fail after a while. I only plug it in every now and then to transfer some things. It's usually off.

1. Make sure that Disk 0 is the primary boot device
2. Make sure that Disk 0 is initialized correctly for the install you are doing (MBR for BIOS install, GPT for UEFI install)
3. Make sure that your installation media is NOT a USB3 USB key. For some reason, USB3 flash drives are fucky with windows installs.

My clip zip died, I now have one of those Ruizu x02 or something to replace it. I dearly miss rockbox, it's just too good. Actually, having used Samsung, Philips, Sony, Creative, Cowon, Sansa, Archos and Apple players, along with plenty chink shit, I can confirm rockbox is largely better than all of those.

Thought of building something similar to a SteamOS machine, only with Windows 10 with Big Picture as a shell replacement (I've done this before, no problems with that).

Now, is there any possible way of tampering with Windows 10 to disable stupid shit that's not needed for a machine that's only going to do games and maybe, just maybe some light web browsing?

Someone did it for you then.

Search your email on Google and see if it appears somewhere. If it does, odds are you're responsible for it, so remove it. Then, click those "unsubscribe" links in emails. Really, they work. At some point, you won't receive any anymore.

I used to be in the same situation. Now no one sends me emails anymore and I came to miss spam.

Is it worth upgrading to 16GB from 8GB just for GPU passthrough? I dislike using Windows as my main operating system but I do play games on a regular basis, I already used some linux distros for a long time so I can make myself at home there. Dual booting is a thing I really dislike.

Not yet. It's not an easy thing to do unless you're at Linux sysadmin level. It is worth getting 16GB for other reasons though, such as making RAMdisks, or enabling disk caching.

None of them.

Learning a C-like syntax high level language is a great introduction.

Thanks, i'll start with Java. However, I've been trying to learn programming for the past year, and i'll get to a point and get stuck on something, usually related to incorrect logic, and failing to understand syntax. Is it really just a matter of persisting? or are there certain qualities programmers need to be good at programming? is it normal to spend a large chunk of your day just learning to program? or am I just really stupid?

>>54614102
It's normal.

It helps if you break things down into small tasks.

Even the most trivial things can be broken out into many many small details about the language syntax or the operating system you're working with.

IMO, C# is a better hobbyist/beginner language, but a Java is fine too.

In addition to just learning the language, you should look into other material to help you. You should definately look into some simple logic stuff, and it wouldn't hurt to get some knowledge in how a computer actually works, although you don't really need. Look into these if you are interested in learning a bit more

What's the reason for choosing all the proprietary standards in networking ?
I mean I really get why you'd choose proprietary software, etc.

But the layer2 & Layer1 standards ? I mean, I just can't see any reason for an IT or network admin to choose those over the open standards. It feels like you're terribly limited in you choices, and your network scalability is withheld.
It also makes it a fucking mess for anybody that has to learn all those standards ;-;

So I'm at college and I've finally bitched at IT long enough for them to get around to turning the ethernet port in my residence on.

I don't have an antivirus running on my computer because I am not a retard and it's been years since I've actually been stupid enough to run porn.exe or turn my adblocker off. I'm also running a version of Windows 7 that is several years behind on updates because I don't want Microsoft watching me jerk off or installing Windows 10 on my computer. But they're telling me now that if I connect to the college network without an antivirus or a fully updated OS I'm just going to be infected immediately.

Is that true? Am I able to just get infected just by plugging into their network?

I highly doubt it. Infecting a computer requires you to execute malicious code on it, you'd have to download something and run it yourself. I don't believe simply connecting to a network could damage your computer in any way.

They probably just say that to scare the students into downloading an AV for their own safety.

I think everything is finally hooked up and working properly, but for some reason the computer will only turn on when it's laying on its side. If I stand it up, it refuses to work. Even poking the power pins with a screwdriver didn't get it to turn on.

Can I just... leave it like this? Or is there something wrong that needs further attention?

Is it safe to manage your bank account through you phone?
>>
>>54624560
It is as safe to manage your bank account through your phone as it is to manage it online in any fashion.

Which is to say, safe. People aren't going to hack your phone to steal your bank account info. That's not what they do.

They're either going to steal your phone and find that you've saved your bank password on it(which is why you shouldn't do this), or they're going to pretend to be from the bank and ask you what it is(which is why you should never tell anyone). If you don't do either of these things, it's perfectly safe. Nobody's going to hack you, and if the bank itself gets hacked it doesn't matter how you've been managing your account.
>>
>>54624708
I ask this primarily for the feature in which your phone notifies you any time there's a transaction made with your cards
Dunno if you have to download your bank's app to do so though
>>
>>54623414
It's the website that decides whether you download or view, not Google. There's many reasons why they might make you do that.

>>54623499
6600K, if you possibly think that's not good enough (I doubt this) then at least you'll have the same socket and RAM on your motherboard for a (relatively) easy upgrade.

>>54623947
I own one, the 9350. Great thing as long as you don't mind the price. Only common issue I can think of is that the display has some form of adaptive brightness that you can't disable. There's an update file online for the qHD displays to disable it, but not the 1080p models.

>>54623884
Best bet is to google your motherboard and under RAM specs it should say exactly what it supports. That said, I don't know any motherboard that cares what voltage the sticks run at. Frequency is the only thing that should matter if you know it's DDR4.
