I feel like contracts/plans are a scam and cost way too much. I want to be able to just buy a phone and put a SIM card in it.
I was looking at buying an S4 Active (network unlocked) from here http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Samsung-Galaxy-S4-Active-i537-4G-AT-T-GSM-Unlocked-Android-Smartphone-Blue-/351660230252
Then buying an AT&T SIM card and no contract plan from StraightTalk $45/month 5GB data.

My work pays for my phone and basically all I use it for is jacking off to hentai. It's a pretty sweet deal.
I've used StraightTalk and Cricket with Nexus phones, unlocked phones, and AT&T gophones without issue. Just make sure the phone is unlocked/has the right antenna to connect to the network the prepaid company uses.

verizon is a cdma network that mean verizon phone only work on a cdma signal sprint too
att and tmobil are gsm they dont have to be unlocked but verizon and sprint need to be unlocked

Different cell phones have different antenna calibrations and operate on different netcode frequencies depending on which carrier the phone is associated with and the model of the phone itself. I'd recommend just going into an at&t store and ask to speak with technician specialist there and they should be able to help you out. Just tell them you're looking for a phone with an antenna properly calibrated to operate on the Straight Talk netcode frequency.
