The prison system incentives good behavior such that even people with life sentences have a reason to act good. Better jobs, better prisons, better pay, more visiting hours, phone calls, etc. There are a number of ways to make someone's time hard. One of my favorites is "diesel treatment," where you get transferred to a prison across the country and they take 2-3 months to transport you there, going from county jail to county jail, no phone calls, mail, or visits. Then when you get there, you're stuck across the country from your family for at least 18 months before you can even request a transfer.
