Would you consider working on an open source BLDC controller using a FPGA? They're much better at it than MCUs but all the commercial solutions have horrible licensing terms or ridiculous pricing. I want to build one but I have no FPGA experience so I'm stuck with microcontrollers for now.

They're not that complex however it requires sampling voltage and current at multiple locations while performing mathematical calculations which becomes quite difficult on a CPU due to how latency sensitive it is.
