Ironically I tried doing that too some time ago but telegram annihilated my battery, almost halving the uptime.

I don't know what had caused it, I tried removing permissions like location and keep awake, greenifying it, the full works, but it still persisted to a good extent so I removed it and never looked back.

If I feel like upgrading I can install CM and get a newer android version without getting new hardware. I don't see the point tho, as you can see the phone works fantastic, and their specs are still more than enough to handle 2016 software (2GB of RAM, 1080p screen, etc)
