What became of phreaking now days? Did it die with the changes to telephone tech or did it reinvent itself? Not specifically blue boxing though.

Yep. It's all business now. Russians selling botnets and "cyber security" PHD's trying to get famous by writing papers on every little bug in existence.
You can dig around with cellphones and fake bts but it is easy way to get partyvan.

This. Most carriers give unlimited texting and calling.
Phone booths are a thing of the past, too.

It's mostly digital today, so say if you want to get into the system of your ISP you would have to hack his infrstracture. Oldschool phreaking was mostly about analog technology. All colorboxes were using some sort of a tone and dtmf signals so it's just not possible today. You can have fun with BTS and IMSI catchers though. SDR is now where the old phreak spirit is.
