VLC is much better now than it was when it originally earned its reputation. I honestly don't know if there is any reason to not use it now because I haven't kept up with testing new versions against the faults it used to have.
However, there is definitely no reason to go from something like MPC-HC with filters or mpv to VLC, even if VLC is no longer as bad as it was.
