Other business laptops are also welcome in /tpg/ (e.g. Dell Latitude/Precision, HP EliteBook/ZBook).
----
If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™

Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", lightweight
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

What's the best model for a student starting college in the fall?
My budget is around $250 (I am planning on buying refurbished).
All I really want is a screen that is at least 14", and a minimum of 4gb ram (ideally something that is upgradeable to 8).
Processor needs to be at least an i5, but I'm not going to be doing anything that requires powerful hardware.
Probably just some web browsing and word processing.
I was looking at the t420 since it seemed to fit most of my requirements, but is there a better option?

Sometimes I wonder what's baiting and what's actual opinions.
Just so you know, in case that's an actual opinion, it's about 5 years out of date. Not baiting.

Also pic rel is you
>>
>>54581414
Thanks for the confirmation.
The only other thing I had a question on was that a lot of people were saying that the default screen (1366 x 768) the t420 comes with is garbage and it should be replaced with a 1600 x 900 screen.
If I'm not really going to be using this laptop to play or watch anything, the screen resolution shouldn't matter too much right?
>>
>>54581476
That's... pretty backwards thinking. Higher resolution is way more beneficial in text situations than in games/movies.
>>
>>54581476
If you want to use 1366x768 res just get x220/x230.
T420 is absolutely disgusting and completely unusable because of no IPS option
>>
>>54581474
Could have just said you were baiting.
Nobody is retarded enough to actually *like* Windows.
>>
>>54581503
>>54581512
So an x220 with a resolution of 1366 x 768 would be fine?
I think the t420 with the better screen would push it out of my budget.
>>
>>54581543
You said you want 14" but x220 is 12.5". Forget the resolution, pick you screen size and go with that.

I would recommend x220 wholeheartedly, though.
>>
>>54581533
Wew lad, you're such an intelligent troll. I almost took the bait.
You must be extremely toxic irl if you take a pleasure from trolling strangers on 4chan. Well, that explains why everybody hates you.
>>
>>54581543
t420 doesn't have IPS screen. You can't even imagine how BIG the difference is.
get x220 with IPS.
>>
>>54581512
You can replace the T420 screen with the 14" 1600x900 from the R2 M14 Alienware laptop.

But it's still not IPS, still much better than the stock screen from lenovo however.
>>
>>54581569
>>54581585
If the resolution is really that big of an issue then I'll be able to compromise with a smaller laptop.
How's the battery on the x220?
>>
>>54581585
If you're an IPS fag then yeah you'll hate yourself for not getting an IPS, but MOST people are totally used to TN laptop screens and consider it normal.

I have an X220 and a T420. X220 is being lent to my mom because it's too small for me to use comfortably and the T420 has more storage options and higher resolution so it's more comfortable.
>>
>>54581612
Up to 10 hours with 9cell battery, i5-2520m and SSD.
>>
How is the x220 for comfy bed anime time? Feel like the screen size might be a bit too small.
>>
>>54575549
yes, actually. I just tried it.
>>
>>54581661
It is, which is why I use my T420 for anime watching. It isn't IPS, but it's honestly not a huge deal unless you're being autistic. I have IPS panels on my desktop, my laptop can be TN. My X220 with the IPS panel looks good for colors and viewing angle, but it's just too small for me and the keyboard feels too cramped.
>>
This may be a pleb ignorant question but im going to ask it any way.

Is there any way to replace my screen in my thinkpad for a better one? Can the internal gpu keep up with that? The one in my T520 is at 1366x768 and I would like for it to be 1080. It isnt necessary but it would be nice.

>>54581685
I was thinking of getting a T420 for comfy bed and couch shitposting time. I don't mind the TN as long as the viewing angles aren't too bad (better than an T61 I hope) and the colors aren't washed out with too much backlight bleed. This T61 I'm currently uses looks pretty terrible I hope the T420 is better.
>>
>>54581721
My dad had a T60 and if I am remembering correctly it is slightly better, but not by a lot. The 1600x900 Samsung panel used in the R2 M14 alienware is pretty good though and you can do the replacement for ~$50.

So I can either get a t420 or an x220 in my price range, but both come by default with tn screens.

So far I've only been looking at refurbished and those are all around $230, with the screen replacement being close to $70 or $80.
I've never really bought anything used before and since I really need this laptop to work for at least four or so years I'm a little cautious about buying a used/non refurbished model.

Both t420 screens are garbage IMO, the viewing angle is the main reason its; shit and the one on the 900p is no better than the 768p

This is an unpopular opinion but on the x220 I think 1366x768 is a fine resolution for its screen size

>>
>>54581393
Just bought a T420s for €260. In the EU the prices for the ThinkPads are higher than in the US, also, the s model is a bit more expensive. You should be able to get a very good T420 for $250 in the US I'm sure.
>>
>>54583594
>You should be able to get a very good T420 for $250 in the US I'm sure.
With 8GB of RAM and maybe even an SSD.

I got mine with an i5 and 8GB with the 1600x900 for $180 in the US.
>>
>>54581393
What the guys have said. A 2nd or 3rd gen X or T series are fine. The smaller X will be more portable if you wanna carry it around and apparently has great battery timing as seen here >>54580932

So yeah, T420 or T430 if you absolutely need a 14" or X220 or X230 if you can go smaller.
>>
>>54583612
Damn, that's a very good price. Did you get the 2540M?
What I got:
T420s
i5-2540M
8GB
No HDD/SSD (I already had one)
1600x900 (all T420s have this resolution)
Windows 7 (couldn't order it without it)
Free docking station :D
>>
>>54583670
>i5 2520M
>8GB RAM
>1600x900
>W7 pro
>6 cell battery
>320GB HDD
>DVD drive in the ultrabay.

Gonna take the HDD out and put it in a Ultrabay caddy, gonna toss a 240GB SSD in for the boot drive then have the HDD for storage. I'll probably keep the DVD drive around in case I ever need it, but everything I do is network or USB based these days.

It arrives tomorrow.
>>
>>54583722
Nice, I'd go for an external storage though. Depends on how often you need to access it of course, but for me having an external HDD with 2 TB space works best (I keep my music and text documents in my laptop but my movies on the external HDD)

Got an X201i about a week ago for $70. I think the only difference in the "i" version is that its an i3 but still 2.4ghz dual core hyperthreaded blah blah is fine. I'll upgrade the ram and get an ssd eventually but so far it runs great. Running Ubuntu Mate because of the whole Linux Mint hack a while. More that it revealed they weren't running things to well behind the scenes than concerns over the hack itself.

Only issue was the wifi seemed fucked. Thought it was drivers at first but tried fiddiling with the internal card and it started working for a few minutes after booting and then would time out and no longer show other networks, and continued to say I was connected to my network even after disabling networking. Ended up getting a little nano wifi dongle for the time being, because my other ones stuck out too much but so far its working fine. I'll get around to replacing the internal card eventually but I just wanted a quick cheap fix.
>>
>>54583850
Ah I see. Yeah I have a desktop too with another 3TB storage (18TB HOLY SHIT), it's actually more reason to have the external HDD since it allows me to transfer big files easily from one PC to another, but you could always just swap out the 320GB HDD easily if you have an external HDD bay on your desktop (my friend has one, I don't unfortunately).

On another note, shitposting on a laptop is one of the most comfiest thing imo
>>
>>54583928
I do have a 2.5"/3.5" USB HDD Dock so it's super simple to transfer files to my desktop. And my home network is robust so network file transfers are a non-issue as well.

And yeah, 18TB, gotta have room for all the anime somehow.

I will be sure to update TPG when I get my T420 sometime tomorrow (hopefully)
>>
>>54584047

>>54584235

>>
>>54584318
I mean when you get into that amount, how much have you actually watched? That's getting to the "have an rss feed to continually autodownload the entire anime category of a torrent site" kind of territory.
>>
>>54584489
~70%

It's not that hard, and I dont even auto download.

I do have some pretty bloated encodes of a few things inflating that number.

CLANNAD for example, 42 episodes for both series, 294GB. 251GB for Dragon Ball Z, a couple other 150GB+ things. Then a TON of 15-30GB seasons.
>>
>>54584540
Yeah, I suppose some BD rips can get pretty huge, but I don't know if you'll really see that much more quality in anime vs things with real people (not that it really matters if you have that much storage and a fast enough connection)
>>
>>54584627
yeah 150/150mbps and this many HDDs kinda just makes it so I dont worry about file sizes and just download whatever I want in the highest quality I can find.
>>
>>54584489
>how much have you actually watched
Honestly it's not much about having watched it.

It's more of having hoarded it so that one day when everything gets taken down because loldmca, you'll be able to say "Hey I can share it"
>>
>>54584654
I hear that. I don't have the money to buy a bunch of drives but I share the sentiment. You'd probably enjoy /r/datahoarder (if you don't already, or don't hate reddit like so many here do)
>>
>>54584540
At what point will you decide to delete them? Can I decide it for you? How about right now?

Let it go, anon. I'm a datahoarder myself, but I have my limits. You should too.
>>
>>54584774
If it gets to the point I fill my current 18TB and I don't think it's time for another HDD I will prune the collection.

Hell I am confident I could probably delete ~500GB of duplicates if I wanted to spend the next 45-60 mins sorting through everything.

But I have 3x3.5" drive bays left available in this rig, so I will likely fill them out before pruning.
