Just got a X250 new for $869 AUD(better than half price in Australia) . i5 5200u, 8gb, 128gb ssd ,full HD IPS. Gotta say its the best laptop I've ever owned. Just got rid of windows 10 for Ubuntu and its been a way better experience than my previous laptops (mostly asus). Why the fuck do people think touch pads are better? This track point shit is very efficient once you get used to it. The only thing I've noticed is it tends to drift on its own for a few seconds until i'm guessing it re calibrates, is this normal?

What's the best model for a student starting college in the fall?
My budget is around $250 (I am planning on buying refurbished).

I have 17.75TB on my desktop so I have plenty of storage elsewhere.
I just want a portable anime watching and shit posting machine I can load up linux on.
Got an X201i about a week ago for $70. I think the only difference in the "i" version is that its an i3 but still 2.4ghz dual core hyperthreaded blah blah is fine. I'll upgrade the ram and get an ssd eventually but so far it runs great. Running Ubuntu Mate because of the whole Linux Mint hack a while. More that it revealed they weren't running things to well behind the scenes than concerns over the hack itself.
Only issue was the wifi seemed fucked. Thought it was drivers at first but tried fiddiling with the internal card and it started working for a few minutes after booting and then would time out and no longer show other networks, and continued to say I was connected to my network even after disabling networking. Ended up getting a little nano wifi dongle for the time being, because my other ones stuck out too much but so far its working fine. I'll get around to replacing the internal card eventually but I just wanted a quick cheap fix.

Ah I see. Yeah I have a desktop too with another 3TB storage (18TB HOLY SHIT), it's actually more reason to have the external HDD since it allows me to transfer big files easily from one PC to another, but you could always just swap out the 320GB HDD easily if you have an external HDD bay on your desktop (my friend has one, I don't unfortunately).
On another note, shitposting on a laptop is one of the most comfiest thing imo

I do have a 2.5"/3.5" USB HDD Dock so it's super simple to transfer files to my desktop. And my home network is robust so network file transfers are a non-issue as well.
And yeah, 18TB, gotta have room for all the anime somehow.

If it gets to the point I fill my current 18TB and I don't think it's time for another HDD I will prune the collection.
Hell I am confident I could probably delete ~500GB of duplicates if I wanted to spend the next 45-60 mins sorting through everything.

Don't get a T420 with an i7 processor, the i5-2540M is the sweet spot (a.k.a. doesn't overheat your ThinkPad). Also the i7 dualcore isn't really that much faster compared to the i5
