Are prebuilt HP desktop workstations for home use a good idea if I have the money?
Used? Probably, great looks, high quality components and plenty of horsepower.
New? Probably not.
>if I have the money
buy them off ebay, or look for 20% off
hp workstations are the most expensive out of dell and lenovo
Also look on auction websites
In australia pickles auctions for example
Nope just do an AM1/FM2+ build if you need something for home use. Prebuilts are never worth it new or used imho.

Fuck them, my A10 APU laptop's trackpad died the first month (tried driver updates and re-installs, no dice), shitty plastic frame spontaneously cracked in 3 places around the screen, and battery and laptop charger died after a year of use.

>my A10 APU laptop
No wonder you think OEM hardware is shit, maybe try buying something worth a shit next time before you apply some walmart shitbox anecdote to multi-thousand dollar enterprise gear that isn't even made by the same division of HP.
I'd take a Z series over some cheapo shitdozer vomit box any day, and a $300 dual-westmere hexcore Z600 will blow one of those things the fuck out core-for-core pretty handily.

from what my brother tells me, new hp stuff kind of sucks, so if it's an old refurbished one from pre-2011 and it has quality components, go for it and you should probably also hook it up with an ssd and look into a sub $100 graphics card compatible with the power supply.
i'm 22 and my first computer was a $600 hp laptop from 2010. it lasted me a good five years for a minimum wage-affordable laptop, but i'm told the price/performance on newer hp computers isn't as good as it was 8-10 years ago.
go the refurbished route, boss
Can you get HP-UX on an HP workstation anymore? Or do they push you towards RHEL and SUSE?
>>54552742
No, the last HP-UX workstation HP shipped was the Itanium-based zx6000.
A C8000 is a better and probably faster choice, though.
> HP
not even once

It's kind of funny, cause I would never buy an HP server (always Dell), but I would consider an HP desktop... Weird...
>>54551701
in simple terms, hp is the Apple of pc.
>>54551701
Yes.
Also look at Dell and Lenovo's offerings. They have similar capabilities but sometimes go for less.
Look at this baby:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Lenovo-ThinkStation-D20-Xeon-X5650-Hex-Core-2-66GHz-24GB-RAM-2x-1TB-HDD-/172202754137?hash=item2818158059:g:xb0AAOSw1KxXM0NL
>hex core cpu
>24gb RAM
>2tb store
>capability for 2nd CPU add-in later
Only has a basic GPU, but also only $350.

hp enterprise != hp consumer
Practically two different companies.
>>54556525
Yeah, in a lot of ways these days. HP's workstations are filling the void left by the non-trashcan Mac Pros.
>>54551701
If you're buying used, there is literally nothing that provides better bang-for-the-buck in terms of horsepower and build quality than a used HP or Dell workstation.
>>54556574
>Practically two different companies.
Literally are two different companies.
HP Enterprise = servers, workstations
HP, Inc. = shitty laptops and overpriced printer cartridges
