Just left my last job in an unrelated field and got an offer for a help desk job in NYC for 50k a year. Would I be crazy to take it while I develop my portfolio and look for a web dev job? Mainly concerned with the work life balance, don't care about it being dead end as much

>NYC
>50K
if you have family there that'll let you live with them so you don't have to pay half your income in rent, sure

Entry level web dev with no experience or CS degree would be about the same. I figure w/ a 50k salary I could at least negotiate up a little bit even if it took longer to get one.

you will be living in poverty or commuting a long distance to live on 50k in NYC

>help desk job
I'd rather be a meth whore

I don't disagree.

NYC != Manhattan
It's doubtful this help desk job is even in Manhattan, why would he live there?
NYC (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, SI) is affordable on 50k, plenty of waiters and clothing store clerks and taxi drivers live there on half that salary

I pay 800 in rent in the second most expensive neighborhood in queens. Midtown is a 25 minute commute by subway...

xDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

My whole point is that NY is affordable on a modest salary you autist. Also, Astoria is nice as fuck, so you're even wrong about that.

I know the job itself sucks, but I'm mainly concerned about hours. I've heard stories of understaffed offices with tons of unpaid overtime. That would be a deal breaker for me.
Eeeeverrybody starts at the helpdesk tho. Gotta put in your time. They don't just hand the reigns of the company over to some schlomo they haven't test-driven yet.

Are you being sarcastic? It has the lowest mobility of any tech job.
