You should buy a quad core Phenom II like the X4 965 on eBay for $20 fampai. Still decent CPUs for most tasks.
>>
>>54548939
I was thinking of splurging on one of the FX-series, either an 8350 or 6300.
>>
>>54549004
Waste of money at this point. Wait for Zen to deliver us from Intel's 5% a year kikery.

>>
>>54549004
Your motherboard only supports 95W CPUs at most. So the 8350 is ruled out. But the 6300 is a possibility. Just make sure it is updated to the latest BIOS. 6300s are still somewhat expensive though so you may just want to wait for Zen and do a motherboard, cpu, RAM, etc.

If you can spare any money i'd recommend 2666mhz RAM or faster as it actually seems to make a difference for some games (GTA 5 is a big one)

I know, it's about frequency and ram timings.

Higher frequencies don't mean shit if the latencies are really high, they will just cancel each other out

Yes. You can have higher timings with higher frequencies because the end result is no more latency than low timings with low frequencies, but you also get the massively increased bandwidth.

yeah, i'm working on uploading it all to a cloud backup service in case of a drive failure but it's taking ~5 months @1MB/s. 1 month down, 4 to go.

Mainly just my anime and TV i've collected over the past 3-4 years.
>>
>>54560735
Is there really that much content that you can't just stream from another service like Netflix or Crunchyroll that makes it worth the effort? Genuine question, not trying to be a dick. I don't really watch much TV or movies, so, I don't know how much of what you watch is available on streaming platforms.
>>
>>54560780
Content wise, you're able to get probably ~40-50% of it from streaming services. The rest is more difficult to find. But in all cases I will have higher quality than what is available to stream.

So while netflix might have the TV show or the movie, they wont have a good quality bluray rip. It will be much lower bitrate because you have to stream it.

I have spent ~$600 on hard drives. If I were to buy all the media I have it would cost far more however.

There have also been occasions where I dont have internet for a few days when my ISP fucks up and it's great having thousands of hours of TV and movies and anime at my disposal.
>>
>>54560826
I guess it makes sense then. My storage situation is pretty, as you can see with a 480GB SSD and the 6TB HDD. I have a small case, so I went with a big drive. But, due to it's spin-up time, I may just put it and a few other drives in a NAS. And maybe use the extra internal space on my case for a couple more SSD's. I really only need the storage for my music files and photos. FLAC is obviously very storage consuming, but my camera's RAW shoots are also like 45-65MB each, and I like to save all the shots, even the ones I don't actually edit or use.
>>
>>54560909
Yeah i only have 2 more drive bays free in this rig right now. After that I will likely be setting up a NAS. I know your case is pretty restrictive, especially with that water loop going on, so SSDs might be a better option for you and just set up a NAS for HDDs.
>>
>>54560936
What case are you using? Maybe you can get one with more HDD bays? Or check out some of Lian Li's NAS enclosures. They're a bit pricey, but very nice.

I think the NAS for straight storage might be a better idea, too. I'd like to have three of my SSD's, one being dedicated to OS and software, and the other two to games and some files I want to keep on hand. It'd make good for using this as a LAN box, too. But that's another like $500+ for two more of the same SSD's lol, plus more for a NAS enclosure for my HDD. Probably won't happen, but, just a thought.

Corsair 750D, you'll recognize it from the Guts thread.

I COULD use a 2x5.25" to 3x3.5" hotswap bay.

That would essentially let me expand up to ~35-40TB before needing a NAS.

>I think the NAS for straight storage might be a better idea, too
Even if I dont run out of space in my main rig I will probably have a home server setup in the next 6-12 months regardless. I can always add HDDs to it for a NAS at a later time.
>>
>>54561025
Okay, I've seen that build before.

I've used some 5.25" to 3.5" adapters before. They work nicely, though mine weren't hotswap. I don't know about their reliability lately, either, but I've had some Seagate Barracudas in the past and they were pretty nice. I heard they either have them out now, or will be soon, releasing 8TB single drives. Might be something you want to look into. My 6TB WD is an excellent drive. It just has a (seemingly forever, but that's compared to SSD instant speeds) spin-up time. It's realistically maybe no more than 10 seconds. They run a little warm, but mine is also right under a GPU. Very good drive overall, just stupid expensive.
>>
>>54561077
Yeah I have decided 4TB is the smallest density I will have in my computer. I was THIS close to ordering 8TB drives when i built this rig but figured 12TB was going to be more than enough for now. Then I filled 90% of that and decide to get a WD black 5Tb when it was on sale.

I'm in dire need of an upgrade, so I'll provide you with some cringe. this is a thrift shop build pretty much.

I am a poorfag and newb and I'm looking for some advice. I want to know if anyone thinks i should stick with this graphics card when upgrading or to replace it, i wanna cut costs where i can, and i already got my new cpu and mobo picked out, but I fell in love with overwatch, so I'm down to go without eating for the next week to get my setup playable if I gotta push it.
>>
>>54565193
You can stick with that GPU in the short term, but it needs an upgrade too, just not as bad as your CPU does.

It's pretty bad by today's standards, but it'll do as a holdover until you can buy something better. It should run Overwatch on low at least.

when I first tried during the open beta I had some workable fps in the tutorial, but once i got in a real game it was really chugging

I hope it was just my processor at fault and I can be a bit servicable now that I'm replacing it
>>
>>54569330

yeah works great, 60fps in all games at 1080p. some newer ones have lag at 1440p, and 4k is out of the question except with previous generation games.

Only reason I want a 1080 is so I can make use of my screen's 4k capabilities in newer games, if I had a lower spec monitor I probably wouldn't need to upgrade for another couple years.
>>
>>54569391
how long do you think you would last with the 970? if you weren't upgrading
i have a 1080p monitor :p
>>
>>54569391
nvm
> couple of years
>>
>>54569417

970's should be fine for high to max settings in the newest games at 1080p for another 2+ years I think, and if you don't mind ending up in medium to low settings it'll be fine for another 5+ imo.

Not a fan of widescreen or mixing monitor sizes as much as you did and your RAM could stand to be faster, but otherwise good choices other than your strange choice of storage devices. Wouldn't mind hearing more about that.

Do you guys think I should get a second 970 or get a 1070/1080?

I don't think my motherboard supports SLI so I would need to replace that as well if I decided to get another 970.

As an owner of an MSI board my main complaint is their BIOS layout for OCing is retarded and everything is much more confusingly labeled than gigabyte or asus or others.

The other BIOS settings are also more of a pain in the ass than asus or similar, but not as bad as the OCing section.

>>

The VSX-21 is mostly for audio, but it's connected to an Epson 8700UB projector.

I decided to go for lower timings on the RAM instead of 3200+, they're 2800 sticks so 3000 @ CL14 1T is a happy medium.

Storage is two 1TB 850 pros and a leftover 240GB Sandisk from my old build. The oddballs are just externals I'm using for extra music storage outside the NAS.

>swap usage not 0%

consider adding more ram and turning off swap altogether, it's uselessly slow on a HDD and shortens the life of an SSD.

two 980tis use like 600w at full draw with an OC'd i7 CPU.

1080s are supposed to use even less power than 980s. And you're buying a 1000w PSU....why?

700-800w gold/platinum/titanium unit is more than enough.

1000w is overkill and probably ends up wasting more electricity (idle power draw on 1000w PSUs is dick)
>>
>>54573225

Yeah that's an older shot I never updated. I changed around the storage and PSU. I wasn't sure how much power 1080s would require at the time. I'll probably get 750 or 850.
>>
>>54573306
also is there a reason for the $400 motherboard? Do you need the features its giving you? From what I can see you wouldnt even need more than a $200 motherboard. The only reason to spend more money on a motherboard is if it offers features you will use or need for your build. Since you are getting a closed loop cooler not a custom water loop, buying a super expensive OCing motherboard is just money down the drain. If you had a custom water loop, or were doing LN2 cooling, then sure. Get that motherboard as it is meant to be used for extreme OCing. But otherwise you're just spending money because you can.

>also is there a reason for the $400 motherboard? Do you need the features its giving you? From what I can see you wouldnt even need more than a $200 motherboard.

I upgrade yearly and do a fresh build every 3 years so I always future proof a bit. I might do something more useful with it down the line but at the moment, no it's not really needed.
>>
>>54573588
Well there will be a platform change by the time you upgrade next and you'll need a new motherboard.

I can pretty much promise if you drop $400 on that motherboard you will never use any features you wouldn't find on a run of the mill $150-200 board.

The number of times I hear customers telling me they will upgrade eventually or future proof this, blah blah blah. It's crap, buy what you can afford now that makes sense for the price. Save the rest of your money and plan on upgrading the GPU in ~2 years and the whole platform in 4-5.
