i got these two servers that are under utilized, the hp is running a space station 13 server and the dell sometimes does csgo/arma3 servers but not right now its only doing teamspeak and ftp.
The dell is running dual xeon e5340 with 32gb of ram and the hp is single xeon e5340 with 6gb of ram
i also have fiber internet 50down 31up
What the hell can i use these things for?

Install proxmox, run VMs.

Fucking anything!
You lucky bugger!

Subsonic is great for music streaming to a web client or an app on any device.

Mpd and icecast can do similar things.

Emby is FOSS Plex.

Tor node.

Seed box, git gut on /ptg/

these things are old, businesses are throwing them away i had to pay $150 for the dell one just because it had a windows server license key on the side and i bought 32gb of ram on ebay for 50 bucks. The hp one i just picked it out of recycling two days ago
>>
Install an ircd on it.

:^)

How can I monetize my home server the best way without doing anything illegal?

I am looking for ideas /g/. I am good at scripting with python and doing database admin stuff but can learn anything else.
>>
>>54546522
run a bitcoiner
>>
>>54546646
you mean mining? that is not profitable anymore.
>>
>>54545927
Use them as servers, senpai.
VMs for various purposes; OS testing, netbooting, lab setups, experimentation
Host a website
Store files and information in a centralized location
Heat your house in the winter more practically
>>
>>54545927
i would install a ircd, probably ratbox, and etherpad site for collab coding with friends.
perhaps some dedicated game server, quake? half life deathmatch? counterstrike? all in debian though, fuck your windows server shit
>>
>>54546458
>emby
Is that what mediabrowser became? It's pretty bad.
>>
>>54545927
Give it to me
>>
>>54546646
what is a bitcoiner exactly? no spoonfeeding needed, just some hint. Google found mostly just games, or faucets.
>>
>>54548975
The better term is crypto-miner, which is the name for any device that farms crypto-currency. It can be done via software on GPU or CPU, or it can be done through specially built hardware.

Create a new Gentoo Server.

If only it was winter here in Canada, but no, I'm melting away

Fuck you. I just mowed my yard in 96F degree weather.

I wish there was a service that would allow me to tent out my server space and help me make some side cash. Hell I would guarantee 99% up time for my servers by taking care of them.
>>
>>54549212
ok, that is not profitable.

I thought of running some faucet.
>>
>>54548260
Im running a server and after tweaking it everything works fine

You should throw that old shit away before you take down the power grid.
>>
>>54552794
I wish this meme would end, power is cheap and those things will barely suck any more than the average /guts/ blogger's gaymer shitbox that they run at high load for far longer periods of time than those things ever will be.

Great! Always looking for SummerHosts over at LowEndTalk. Just oversell OpenVZ VMs and you're good!
>>
>>54554379
a lot of recent servers don't actually use much power until you start working them hard, actually. They started incorporating the same stuff desktops and laptops use to slow down and cut power usage when they're idle.

these servers are old, this is the usage at idle (for both) and if the temp goes up the fans will raise this over 500

If you can't think of anything just wait until a viable excuse comes along. About 10% of the capacity of my server I use for personal stuff. The rest I donate out as resources to a local club I'm part of, which is also part of a MAN with a mobile site as well.

I run the server 24/7 regardless so I just like to have it doing whatever it can to justify the costs (which really aren't that bad where I live).
>>
>>54554909
don't run them both 24/7 at the same time then

>>54555111
dunno where you live, but here the rate is about 87 cents/kWh which isn't jack fucking shit, my own 12 year old server costs about $5 a month if I run it at max load 24/7, an average 1U would run about $20 at max load, one of OP's would probably run $25-35, I don't really know what's in them and can't be fucked to pull out my power bill calculator to guess at it

either way, it isn't shit if you're doing it as a hobby, if you were really interested in return on "investment" with server-related jobs you're wasting time and money using any physical hardware period
