Just disable all build-in botnet and it's fine. Also it's a blessing if you have an old phone. I'm using 6.0.1 nightlies on my 4 year old S3 and it's perfect. Especially battery life.

Dev is extremely kind to requests and follows
the comment section on the daily.
I dont use the actual facebook app due it it's bugginess and possible security issues.

Cyanogenmod apps are good.
Cyanogen apps are not.
Also, take advantage of cm's privacy guard. You can manage more permissions than stock android enables you to like disabling wifi usage in an app.

There are no workarounds only for :
- Google app ( + google now on tap)
- Google Keep
For every other app and service google offers there is a workaround. Play store works bit needs to be installed in system/privapp to work properly.
Hangouts needs a special version which I can provide you if you want. Inbox by gmail works. Youtube works. Chrome works.

cyanogen is pretty secure in itself.
what you want to do is not install gapps. or go with very minimal install with no google play services.
also enable the privacy manager. but i think nowadays its enabled by default.
basically it stops any app from using the android api (location, access to files, accounts, camera etc) unless you allow it.
