Private trackers are private torrent trackers, yeah. They're better than something like piratebay because they're less likely to be taken down, less likely to have viruses and low-quality media uploaded to them, much more likely to have good seeders and good retention, etc. They're just overall better. They're not truly "private" but they're not as easy for any given 12-year-old to just stumble onto and start using.
Most people here just circlejerk about them but they're very useful even if you don't have autism.
My favorites are what.cd, iptorrents, and passthepopcorn.
