Its not hard to figure out that the manufactures have an interest in this. It guarantees them a lot of profit over time.
What would they do if they announce that they can sell 2 TB SSDs for cheap right from the start. Consumers would just buy one and keep it.
Instead they sell them 2 TB split up into 5-7 devices over a few years and you pretty much pay the same price with every purchase.
