I have this issue when I go into the bush. I shrink all my tv shows to about 80mb each (20 min shows) and take bulk seasons to watch on my phone on a 64GB card.
Takes about 2 days on my laptop running handbrake 24 hours.

I just had to google tarball. I don't understand what it is yet but nope. Just slowest compression on handbrake at 720p and I can't remember the other settings. took a lot of testing to find the right balance.

Void-linux installation with luks. Texlive, cwm, fluxbox, firefox, other useful stuff (mpv, ranger, w3m, feh, abiword, vim, emacs...) might delete firefox, not an option, it's slow as fuck. Its my portable operating system. Its not a live or persistent one. It's an installation.
The system takes ~400mb, with extras (see above) it takes 4gb, enough for documents a couple of downloaded manga and some vids. Just great, in a 8gb usb.

I'd download a fuckton of books/comics/academic papers from gen.lib.rus.ec and fill up about 25% of the USB that way. Then add a few of my favorite albums in the highest audio quality possible. Maybe a movie or two.

I personally like to bring a ton of emulators for older systems since they're small and have a lot of playtime, but with modern HDs space doesn't really matter as much.
There's often an internet connection available, though it can be really low bandwidth and only good for IM/VOIP (mumble does well with low bandwidth).
