Is it a good idea to buy a skylake CPU now? I'm not educated in the timeline of the architectures but i'm thinking of buying a 6700k and a decent 1151 motherboard in anticipation for either a decent pascal or polaris GPU.

Are there better CPUs coming on the 1151 bracket soon or will that be deprecated soon? (By soon I mean until the end of this year)

Zen and Kaby Lake are both expected by the end of this year. Neither should be "so much better" than Skylake that it will make Skylake obsolete, so Skylake is a safe purchase right now.

What about the 5820k? it sits on the 2011-3 bracket which offers a little bit of future proofing with the broadwell 6900k and others coming out soon too

>>54490470
when is that expected to be released? my last experience with amd cpu was a phenom II X4 965, which was pretty awful considering.
>>
>>54490491
Except Zen will have double the core count at the same price. And this time AMD won't have single threaded IPC issues.

I'd prefer not having housefires and I guarantee that they will have single thread issues. AMD has been going downhill for years, they won't magically shit out a 10/10 chip.

Broadwell-E is coming out in June bud, gonna be revealed at Computex
>>
>>54490385
Go for Haswell and save about 30~40% of the cost.
Can get more perfomance by using the money in a higher tier hash cpu.
>>
>>54492472
This, get a more powerful CPU for less money. Assuming you can find a decent motherboard in stock

ive got a haswell cpu atm, i5 4670k (poor batch) already; just wanting an upgrade for the next 3-4 years

a 4670k is already going to give you the best results for gaming, a 6600k or a 6700kk will give you nothing in regards to performance in gaming.

Hell, even if you had a 2500k i'd say wait another year or more if you can. With a 4670k you should be fine for at LEAST 2-3 years at a minimum, even for VR.

im still running a 3770K @ 3.5GHz

trust me whatever i7 you have, it will be cheaper just to buy a water cooler and overclock it. I havent even bothered yet and my PC is still kicking ass at 4 years old
>>
>>54493344
I dont trust those numbers simply because I have a 5820k hooked up to a UPS that monitors constant power draw.
If I turn off my monitors, speakers, etc and just let my PC idle. I draw 80-100w at max.

Their 115w figure leads me to believe they are using a low quality PSU with poor efficiency ratings at low load levels.

Also, 6-8 core CPUs with a shit load of Cache, it's not a real shocker they hit 140w+
>>
>>54493448
>Their 115w figure leads me to believe they are using a low quality PSU with poor efficiency ratings at low load levels

They were using a 1000W Platinum-rated unit from Seasonic. Try again, Pajeet!

http://www.kitguru.net/components/cpu/luke-hill/intel-core-i7-5820k-haswell-e-6-core-cpu-review/3/
>>
>>54493533
>using a 1000w unit to test load levels under 100w

You know PSUs have TERRIBLE efficency under 10% load right? and Platinum rated PSUs have NO requirements for efficiency % under 20% load.

That platinum unit is rated for 90% efficiency at 20%. However 20% load is 200w. Which almost none of those CPUs will come close to at idle loads.

So at idle loads that PSU is far below the requirement for high efficiency at low loads.

I however am using a Titanium rated 600w unit which the Titanium 80 Pllus specification requires 90%+ efficiency at 10% load levels.

Meaning my PSU is over 90% efficient at loads around 50-60w this is FARRRR more efficient than your seasonic 1000w unit.

Bigger doesnt mean better pajeet.

>>
>>54490385
the cpus today are so fucking overpowered its not funny.

I run 1.gen xeon socket 1156, and it will still last for years.

Get a i5-k or i7-k with a z-chipset motherboard (so you can overclock if want), and you are set for as long as the board lasts.
And 16gb ram.

Voila, you are future proofed.

Skylake is the shit! BUY IT!
>>
>>54493824
Skylake is shit! DON'T BUY IT!
>>
>>54493765
it's an 8 core CPU with a 140w TDP at 3.0Ghz

You then OC it by 1.4Ghz, of course it's gonna draw a shit ton of power. You are adding another ~35% power PER core, and since power draw goes up faster than clock speed, it basically doubles it's initial TDP of 140w.
>>
>>54493824
Ignore the poorfag. It's the best CPU you can buy and it will last a long time. BUT IT!
>>
>>54493596
Did you even fucking read the fucking link, you stuck up stubborn piece of shit? The ram module, drive, and fucking 280mm radiator provides enough draw. Besides the fact that even at 2.5W draw the PSU is about 80% efficient. At 178W, 85%. The system configuration draws 77W alone. Even IF at a MINIMUM of 178W the cpu drew ONLY 100W the rating would be 85% efficient. Do the calculations that follow yourself and fuck OFF.
>>
>>54490385
YES MY GOOD GOY

My OWN computer, the one I am fucking TYPING to you on. Has 32GB DDR4 @ 3200Mhz, GTX 960, full size ATX motherboard, H110i GTX CLC cooler, 3x4TB HDD + 5TB HDD. 480GB SSD and a 250GB M.2 Samsung 950 Pro SSD. Oh, and a bluray burner to round it out.

My system is comparable, if not even more power hungry because i have a ton of LEDs that are always on.

My system still draws under 100w idle.

I'm not questioning their load power results as those are in line with what is expected. However their idle results are muddied simply by the fact their PSU isn't particularly efficient at such low load levels, they should use a quality platinum 700w or one of the new titanium rated units instead.
>>
>>54493957
Fact of the matter is that the unit is 80% efficient when draw is as low as 2W. 115 draws 92W optimistically.
>>
>>54492614
If you have the money and want to use it, sure go for it. But you might get a better 1150 cpu for less money than what you would use with a 6700k.
My two cents, either upgrade for a high 4th or 5th gen cpu, stay with that one for another two years or just wait for the next release.

6800K comes out in the summer. 6core i7 for sub 400USD it seems. I'd wait.

As an AMD user, I'm jumping ship regardless of if ZEN is any good. I need a new board and ram anyways.

Looks fucking awesome

shame my current PC is really doing all i can ask of it, it was only meant to be temporary but i cant find anything a i5 4690 and a z97mplus wont do

would love to drop a 2grand 10core in those for the lols tho
>>
>>54493344
What do you expect they are literally Xeon Server CPU's with a unlocked multiplier and higher quality bin
for double the amount of raw power the little 8 core is actually pretty efficent, thats 8 cores at 4.4ghz mind you unlike the xeons which only have turboboost one or two cores

WANT if they didnt cost $1500 which is fucking insane.
>>
>>54494730
One very specific, incredibility large cooler that was tightened with a power drill, mounted sideways, and jostled roughly around during moving. This was done by a shitty click bait site, and has not been an issue for anyone else. The scythe cooler was subsequently redesigned to actually be to Intel's spec. So it's really the scythe cooler you have a problem with.
>>
>>54492472
It's nowhere near that amount
>>
How well does the i5 6600k overclock? I have my multiplier set to 40 and everything as is, currently running prime95 with temps hovering at 60-70c.
I tried it at 42 with stock volts and windows BSODs after a few minutes on prime95. 45 at 1.2v and my bios wouldn't let me boot.
>>
>>54495572
I'm at 1.35 for 4.6. Had to set the voltage manually, if I tried on "auto" it would bsod past 4.4. 1.35v was the first setting I tried, I might be able to drop the voltage a bit, but it works and u got tired of rebooting a dozen times.

I just bought a Skylake i7 6700K a week ago for Gentoo and it feels incredibly comfy compared to a Core 2 Duo.

What makes you believe Zen will be widely available? Its just now 6700k has dropped down to msrp, and that's with a CPU that was barely better than its predecessor. With all the hype and pent up demand, demand will be high, along with prices. And that's if amd dosent fyck anything up between now and January.

I agree that it's a better deal than the 6700 in a lot of ways but you can't pair it with a sub <80 dollar mobo like you can with the 1231. Also Intel seems to be annoyed that people were pairing the xeons with mainstream mobos so now the new xeons need their own separate ones

So might as well wait for broadwell-e if you are thinking of something right now.
