This is why Free Software is so important.

Do normal people actually believe that shit is possible? At best we could "copy your brains contents" and store it in a computer so it would act as a turing machine based on your data, the real "you" will be dead.

It actually should be possible, except you're one of these normalfags who believe in "souls". The brains content is nothing but data.
>>
That sounds scary
>>
>>54482884
>the real "you" will be dead
The real "you" doesn't exists. Personality is a collection of different experiences.
>>
>>54482725
They should hurry up.
>>
>>54482918
No it's pretty obvious that our lives are bound by biology and chemistry. You can store the data of every particle in a chemical reaction, but it will not be a reaction in your computer, just data. You can simulate said data, but said reaction still doesn't exist.

I think you're just one of those normies who doesn't know how computers or computer data works.

>>54482973
The real "you" is a set of chemical reactions happening inside of you. A computer can simulate a copy of you, that's it.
>>
Let's suppose someone had their entire body slowly turned into a cyborg until nothing but the brain needed to exist, and then the brain was stored somewhere and the data and contents of the brain were copied onto a computer system. When would we cease consciousness? Where exactly is the divide between the physical brain and the mind? If the original brain were destroyed and the data only existed, would it have its own mind, or would it only be analyzable from the computer's readers' perspective?
>>

Yes. Technology is the new magic. Doesn't help that modern so-called science fiction just handwaviums how it works. Arthur Clarke would be spinning in his grave at how dumb society has become.
>>
>>54483155
You would have to experience it yourself since it's all guess work and speculation.

Why is this digitized consciousness taking a dump? Wouldn't transcending your mortal coil allow you take any shape and forgo bowel movements?
>>
>>54483221
There's nothing wrong with speculation. For much of human history, science was all guess work and speculation.

I suppose if the mind is influenced by the brain which is influenced by the environment as extracted from the senses, then once the only remaining vessel is the brain then there would be no need for individual thought as influenced from the environment. Since many of our ideas are a product of what we experience, we can imagine the brain-only would spend most of its time pleasuring itself through artificial sensory experiences if given the power.

If one were to be born as a brain-only it would be something to study; we can imagine they might become total vegetables, or they might have extremely alien ideals based upon their odd birth-environment.
>>
It won't happen. The only way to attain immortality is by very VERY quickly replacing our neurons and other brain structures with analogous cybernetic replacements. Then we just toss the 'brain' into whatever casing we see fit and replace it as needed. The key is to not disrupt any of the functions of the brain while replacing its parts. ETA 2166.

Think of it like this, my tech illiterate dipshit, I splat your brain on the concrete with a hammer and very carefully map out the entire structure of your brain on a big piece of paper as bits, I now start moving around said bits to simulate your brain. Is the new big paper full of ones and zeroes your new consciousness?

>b-but muh quantum computers!

You faggots need to stop thinking about computers as these magic black boxes that do everything for you.

Not OP, but people like you need to stop thinking about brains as magic black boxes that create consciousness. If you can perfectly map out and simulate a brain, it stands to reason that the simulation will react exactly as the brain would. If you believe that that simulation would not be "conscious", it implies that consciousness is some sort of magic.

I don't know, but no amount of post-modernism will allow that to make you "immortal." The moment you are uploaded to that is the moment you are dead. That or you'll do it during your lifetime but it'll only be a copy of you, with even more imperfections.

Consider a person who is in a brain dead state. They are not conscious and are pronounced dead.

There's so much that isn't known about the brain, and how it connects with the body, proper functions aside. We live in a time that allows to quickly dismiss brain studies as as "pseudo science," which should tell you that we aren't ready to make many decisions in regards to technology that tampers with the brain.

i think it was more of a biproduct of parallel computation, the multi-core-ism of something like doing pattern recognition on visuals while remembering a pathway to water (memory isn't separate storage from processes, but part of it).

>>54486608
(cont) so all the processes conscience arose from were selected for, but not the consciousness. ego does give some social benefit, but i don't think its big enough to select for and vertebrates are communal long before consciousness.

Hahaha! You're hilarious.

When/if serious longevity treatments are invented, they will go to the wealthiest, and the price will never go down. You and I are never living to 125.

Whoever's on top when immortality is created will be on top forever. Human society will fossilize. You think you're going to work your way into the ranks of people who have had 200 years for compound interest to work its magic? Nigga please.

i agree that environment makes the person, but if we can create animation and digital art, then this can 'pleasure ourselves' the same way it does now. i think for us first gens, the biggest and most noticeable change will be lack of hormone stimulation. no stress, no hunger, no macho projection, no cornered reflex, etc.

All it takes is a power outrage or an EMP nuke and your data is corrupted = you become retarded or dead.

Who would want to exist forever?

What if someone locks your data up for eternity? Would wouldn't be able to die. You'd just exist as data forever in a black void.

Yeah I agree with this. Consciousness is tricky subject. We are reaching an impasse where the walls surrounding the Descartian philosophy of self are being torn down.

To me consciousness seems to be part of the complexity of the event drive feedback loop we call life. Honestly consciousness itself could just be an advantageous glitch in our evolutionary programming. It helps enable fear of death, reinforces object permanence ("If that is that, then what am I?"), motivates the selection of cultural traits, etc. It could literally be the mind tricking itself into the idea of a separate distinct existence.

>>
>>54483155
We would begin to cease consciousness the very moment we lost any of our will to live, I suppose as caused by a loss of disconnect from reality the further or less 'lifelike' it seems. A data system sounds like a strange way to find a continuation of your life but it doesn't seem anyway worthwhile to drive a chemical, biological reaction within your own body. Unless you expect to 're-hook it up to a new body' and the complexity with that would have to be resolved with biotech in some way, I guess.
