my friend wants to upgrade his shitbox computer (pic related) on the cheap cause a new build would be too much for him and i suggested the following upgrades:
25$ quad core phenom from ebay
20$ 2*4gb ddr2 from ebay
65$ 1tb HDD from store
70$ GT610 from store
he basically wants hdmi audio, more storage, and the ability to run 1080p movies smoothly since his onboard gpu struggles.
is this good enough?

Should be able to get a used GTX 750 or similar for that price. Which is a damn sight better than a GT610 and will easily power 1080p video playback

the GT 610 is a regbaged GT520 which in turn was just an upgrade on a venerable GT220.
It's a very low end GPU. In fact, the newer generation intel integrated GPUs are more powerful.

It's his CPU struggling and not his GPU when playing 1080p videos. So just get the cheapest graphics card for HDMI output. A small SSD will also improve user experience.
